Studying Latin American history at Duke meant Jean spent years reading Spanish-language primary sources — colonial documents, political speeches, literary texts — and building fluency that goes well beyond classroom drills. She teaches grammar and vocabulary in context, connecting verb tenses and sentence structures to how Spanish is actually used in writing and conversation.

Having studied Spanish through multiple levels, Matthew understands the grammar hurdles — ser versus estar, subjunctive triggers, preterite versus imperfect — that stall students at each stage. He teaches conjugation patterns and vocabulary in context so that rules stick through usage rather than rote charts. His structured, analytical approach is especially useful for students who think of themselves as "math people" struggling with a language requirement.
I am working as a program manager at a local non-profit organization in Miami. Outside of academia and work my interests are singing karaoke with friends, swimming, watching movies, and reading about environmental and social justice issues. In the past I have tutored public health topics (including epidemiology) online, taught environmental science and history courses, and tutored students in-person on ACT prep, biology, voice lessons, and Spanish language. My clients have been middle school, high school, university, and graduate students. My favorite subjects to tutor are those that I myself had to work the hardest to conquer (ACT, Spanish fluency, epidemiology and chemistry)! I love teaching these subjects because through my own struggle to achievement I have developed especially effective methods for my clients to succeed as well. My teaching style is based upon working with clients to develop individualized study methods. I am a tutor who is patient, caring, and committed to seeing you exceed your goals. Don't hesitate to contact me if you are searching for a tutor with these qualities.
Marlow teaches Spanish across all four levels, which means understanding exactly where the jump from conjugating regular verbs to navigating the subjunctive mood trips students up. That continuity across levels lets each session build logically on what a student already knows rather than starting from scratch with disconnected grammar rules.
I am excited to be back in Atlanta and continuing to work with students!
I am law student at Georgia State University. I have a B.S. in Management with a Certificate in Marketing from Georgia Tech, where I was in the Co-op Program and the Honors Program. I sing and play the Flute. I grew up playing softball, and also played lacrosse and tennis. I am a huge football fan. I love to travel and have traveled extensively in Europe and Australia, as well as around the US.
I grew up speaking Spanish, then I studied it from 6th grade until the end of my college years. I majored in Spanish and Education for my B.A. from Fisk University and furthered my studies to include Humanities for my M.A. from Old Dominion University. I love teaching Spanish, which is what I currently do in four schools and tutor in my off time. I love to read books, crochet, and play with my toy poodles. Education is very important to me and I love to help people understand how to speak, read, and write Spanish.
I am an interdisciplinary educator with an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. My background is primarily in integrated arts learning and museum education and I specialize in visual arts, history and art history, and object-based learning. In all subjects, I take a creative, inquiry-based and learner-centered approach, designing opportunities for each unique individual to meet their learning goals.
I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.

Frequently Asked Questions
In a typical Atlanta classroom with a 12.7:1 student-teacher ratio, students get limited one-on-one speaking time. With personalized Spanish tutoring, you get dedicated conversation practice every session—a tutor who listens, corrects pronunciation in real-time, and helps you build confidence speaking naturally. This focused speaking practice is one of the biggest advantages of 1-on-1 instruction, especially for developing fluency and accent improvement.
Verb conjugation is one of the trickiest parts of Spanish grammar, but it becomes manageable with consistent practice and pattern recognition. A tutor can help you understand the logic behind conjugations (regular vs. irregular patterns) rather than just memorizing, then give you targeted practice until it becomes automatic. Most students see real progress within a few weeks of focused, personalized instruction on this skill.
The most effective approach combines spaced repetition (reviewing words at increasing intervals) with using new vocabulary in real conversations. A tutor can integrate new vocabulary into your speaking practice and personalize word lists based on your interests and goals, making the learning stick better than generic flashcard apps. This combination of active use and strategic review helps move words from short-term to long-term memory.
Fluency depends on your starting level and how much you practice, but reaching conversational proficiency typically takes 600-750 hours of study according to language learning research. With personalized tutoring combined with your own practice, you can accelerate this timeline significantly. A tutor can help you use your study time more efficiently and keep you focused on the skills that matter most for your specific goals.
Absolutely—accent and pronunciation improvement is one of the key benefits of working with a tutor one-on-one. A tutor can identify exactly which sounds you struggle with (like the rolled 'r' or the difference between Spanish 'z' and 'c'), model correct pronunciation, and give you immediate feedback as you practice. Regular, focused pronunciation work with a tutor produces noticeable improvements much faster than classroom instruction alone.
Understanding cultural context—from regional differences in Spain and Latin America to idioms and social customs—makes Spanish feel more real and memorable. A tutor can weave cultural insights into your lessons, explain why certain phrases are used, and help you communicate authentically in different contexts. This approach turns Spanish from a list of rules into a living language with depth and nuance.
Your first session is all about getting to know you and understanding your goals. A tutor will assess your current level (reading, writing, speaking, listening), learn what you want to achieve—whether that's passing an AP exam, conversational fluency, or improving a specific skill—and create a personalized plan. You'll also get a feel for how the tutor teaches and whether it's a good fit for your learning style.
Tutoring rates vary based on the tutor's experience level, your goals, and how frequently you meet. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert Spanish tutors at different price points to fit various budgets. We recommend discussing your specific needs during an initial conversation—a tutor can give you a clear sense of how many sessions you might need and what investment makes sense for your goals.
