Writing Tutoring review by DeAnna in Atlanta, GA
The student has a long paper due for both of her PhD PSY classes and, we focused on an outline that I helped her create via email. She was not able to make the Saturday meeting, because of illness, so I assisted her remotely and, then met at this session to discuss follow-up from the remote help. She was still brainstorming for her paper when we met and, not at the writing stage. But when I left she seemed very confident in what she planned to write.

Writing Tutoring review by Evan in Atlanta, GA
The student and I worked on the outline for his colonization and imperialism essay, which requires him to connect his ideas with three out of four texts (two books, two films) that his class worked with on the topic. He chose both books ("A Small Place" and "Shooting an Elephant") plus one of the films. We almost completed the outline (including topic sentences, quotes, commentary, and thesis), which was great. He has excellent ideas and, whenever we talk about his essay prompts, he always has good things to say. As I've noted before, the hard part for him is translating that into writing. I hope that the practice we went through today (of writing down his thoughts verbatim as they came out of his mouth, like a stream of consciousness) will give him a good chance to improve on that.

Writing Tutoring review by Lauren in Atlanta, GA
Began writing work on final essay. Worked on grammar as well as broader flow and integration of quotes issues. Discussed my preferences when working off of a detailed outline: keeping the outline as a separate file, copying the relevant points to the essay and then deleting the bullet points as you go, in order to stay organized and make sure that every point get in.

Writing Tutoring review by Bethany in Atlanta, GA
To begin, we discussed the differences between persuasive and editorial writing. Then, she wrote a persuasive paragraph. We kept it short to concentrate on flow of the sentences and connecting thoughts together. After, we worked on math skills. We went through a state test. She did well overall.

We worked on connecting the facts and opinions presented in the body paragraphs to the larger theme of the paper. Regarding writing technique, we improved topic sentences, passive verbs, and word selection.
