Harvey British Literature Tutoring FAQ
Perhaps you may be focusing on British literature for the first time in a middle school or high school class, or preparing for a standardized test like the Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition exam or the SAT Subject Test in Literature. You may even be struggling through a college seminar. Whether you are doing any or all of these things, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a world-class British literature tutor. These professionals can help you effectively make sense of the texts and concepts at hand.
British literature is an expansive category of works that stretches from Old English poetry to modern-day novels. These works have been influenced by specific historical and cultural shifts and make use of a wide variety of genres, styles, and influences. Where is one to begin? Your tutor will begin with your specific concerns and needs. Have a hard time telling the Romantic poets apart, much less analyzing their work? You may be struggling to make sense of what the albatross signifies in Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," or attempting to understand what is going on in Keats's odes. Perhaps you can't keep track of all of the characters in a lengthy novel and, as a result, feel overwhelmed every time you go to read another chapter. Or, maybe Shakespeare's plays or Restoration comedies are giving you a hard time. Whatever the case may be, never fear because your tutor is here!
Being able to properly dissect the above questions and concerns are exactly what your tutor and his or her individualized lessons are for! Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a British literature tutor who can help you make sense of whatever content you are struggling with in the wide world of British literature.
Whether you are focusing on poetry, prose, or drama; from the medieval period to the 21st century, your tutor has you covered. Your British literature tutoring is entirely one-on-one and personalized to your exact curriculum, syllabus, text, assignments, and concerns. While all British literature tutors have demonstrated extensive knowledge of literature and literary analysis, our educational directors work to help you connect with the tutor who can best address your specific needs. This tutor can then design a personal learning curriculum for your tutoring sessions to follow, taking into account exactly what you want to work on and how you want to work on them.
During your tutoring sessions, you are free to work at your own pace, without concern for keeping up with or slowing down for the rest of the class. Your tutor will also work around your schedule, and depending on your preference, tutoring sessions may take place in-person at the location of your choice, or in a face-to-face online session in the comfort of your own home. Your tutor will help you learn to make sense of symbolic imagery, analyze the undertones of complex dialogue, or understand the significance of a poem's use of a particular poetic form. You will not need to go over any material that you have already grasped. You may, however, come away with a better understanding of what you have previously learned. In short, your tutor can guide you along the path of uncovering aspects of British literature that were not apparent to you before, and can help you put this new knowledge to use in your written analyses. You will see that there are so many benefits to utilizing a tutor in the subject of your choice. Call Varsity Tutors for more information on how we can help you connect with the perfect professional, knowledgeable, and flexible British literature tutor today!"

Recent Harvey British Literature Tutoring Session Notes
The student worked on Lesson 12 of her vocabulary today. We reviewed definitions of shapes and measurements typically used in mathematics. We also completed some extra practice for her vocabulary words in Lessons 9 and Lessons 10.
The student's homework assignment was to create a working thesis and outline for an essay that he will be writing about. We also reviewed his history notes about the Renaissance and answered textbook questions concerning the content.
I used online quizzes to test the student on compound, complex, simple, and compound complex sentences. We also reviewed independent and dependent clauses and techniques to identify them. He was proficient in identifying independent and dependent clauses because he remembered that dependent clauses cannot stand on their own. He also did well identifying sentence forms. I found out creating a game using online quizzes or bouncing a ball to him as I give examples and asking him for the right answer is effective because the activities use up some of his excess energy and he can focus better.
The student and I continued to read from the his school book about money. We finished a chapter which was a lot of reading for him and I was impressed by how much he was able to read in the time I was there.
The student and I worked diligently on developing a system for studying his extra credit vocabulary tests. We worked on one section, and came up with a strategy that he felt worked. After that, I helped him work on some of his other general homework assignments.
The student is reading The Giver. We discussed some of the themes that are developed in the first half of the book (identity, conformity, control) and reviewed vocabulary, paying particular attention to context and relationships of new words to other words he knows. I introduced the concept of foreshadowing, particularly in the passage about the problems the community had with the Receiver who preceded Jonas. We also discussed the importance of marking passages that seem important in the development of the book's themes. (He is reading the book on his iPad, but can still mark passages and add notes.)
