Session Summaries by Anatomy Tutors

Anatomy Tutoring review by Katherine in Riverdale, IL
Today we talked about quantum numbers - the allowed states for an electron (Pauli exclusion principle) and periodic trends of atomic radii and ionization energy. The student seemed to understand the concepts reasonably well. I showed her how to add or subtract electrons to find the equivalent electron configuration for an ion vs a ground state element. We talked a little bit about Lewis structures as well.

The student and I reviewed her homework assignment that has to do with bond energies and lattice energies. She seemed a little confused at first about how to approach the problems, but after hearing an explanation once on how to do the problems, she understood how to approach them because she has a good general understanding of the concepts.

Today the student and I went over her study guide for her upcoming test. We went through the different types of reactions (combustion, decomposition, acid-base, redox, etc.) and then worked on supplemental material I brought for her from other AP chem study guides. I got to observe her as she worked through difficult problems and we discussed some of the common mistakes she was making when balancing equations. I gave her some pointers to identify the type of reaction, and from there how to predict the compounds. Next session I want to concentrate on reinforcing the rules for naming compounds and the patterns in the periodic chart. I left her with the supplemental material I brought and a helpful website that provides practice quizzes with answer keys.

Today we spent the session going over the different types and properties of bonds. The student had a packet that defined the types of bonds, and gave examples and questions concerning each. We talked about ionic, covalent, polar-covalent bonds. We covered electronegativity and electron affinity. The student had a good grasp of the material by the end of the session.

Today we reviewed acid/base problems. This student is doing very well with the material. He needs to work most with multiple step problems that he has not seen before. He has some other problems that he can practice with. There were no concerns from this session.

Anatomy Tutoring review by Christopher in Riverdale, IL
Today we covered Chapter 6 in her textbook which the student just started. The main goal was to look at some core concepts within the chapter like some definitions (energy, heat, work) and how they related to the equations so that she can follow along more easily during class this week as they expand. We worked through word problems that the teacher assigned that consisted of enthalpy, determining whether a chemical equation is exothermic or endothermic, using the natural gas law in conjunction with combustion reactions, heat capacity, and Hess's law. The student shows great efficiency in regard to recall of equations and variable values.
