Session Summaries by Algebra Tutors

Algebra Tutoring review by Kellie in Midlothian, IL
Today we completed two sample practice tests in preparation for the student's midterm. These practice tests included finding the x and y-intercepts, writing the equation of a line given points, a graph, or another line, solving systems of equations, determining the system of equations from word problems, and graphing inequalities. She showed improvement from last week in her ability to write equations of lines. She also had a good handle on solving systems of equations using the substitution method. We focused on determining the system of equations from word problems. I emphasized the need to start by writing down everything that is given, that is, defining the variables. Once it is clear what is known, it is easier to figure out what is missing, and how to solve for it. Throughout the session I stressed the need to write out all of her work starting with the generic equation. If everything is already written down, you can look back at what you've already done to regain your train of thought under the anxiety of a test. At the end of the session, she had another 2 hours to study prior to her midterm. I advised her to continue to do practice problems, especially those focusing on inequalities.

Algebra Tutoring review by Brandon in Midlothian, IL
We worked mostly off of an extra credit worksheet. We first covered how to plug values into functions and worked on setting up word problems. The student and I reviewed how to add, subtract, and multiply fractions. We also went over how to use the slope and intercept to write the equation for a line in slope-intercept form. Once I explained how the equation worked, she seemed to grasp the concept very well. We also went over how to determine the slope of a line from two points and how to graph a line from its equation. Overall, the session went very well and I feel like she made very good progress.

Algebra Tutoring review by Peter in Midlothian, IL
Most of this 2 hour session was spent reviewing word problems in two variables. The student is improving here, but he must build more confidence in writing equations based upon what has been described in the questions. The last part of the session was spent reviewing biology. We discussed basic genetics and ecology, vocabulary, and concepts. We reviewed cell respiration and photosynthesis. I suggested the student watch some of the videos going over the concepts here.
