For this lesson, the student and I worked through sections of practice 8 out of the test prep book. We started with a reading section (vocab, short passages, long passages). As far as time goes, he was a little over time on pacing, but his accuracy was relatively high. From there we went to grammar (improving sentences, error identification, improving paragraphs). Overall very good. We then finished with another reading section with a tough dual passage. We'll dedicate a little more time to math during the next lesson if possible.

The student and I had our first session today in preparation for the ACT and it went very well. We looked over her results from the first round of taking the test and discussed some overall anxieties and difficulties, as well as the topics she is struggling with the most. As math tends to be her weak point, we spent most of the session working on practice math problems. Using online resources, she completed an entire algebra practice test, as well as some problems on different math topics. Along the way, we discussed different strategies for approaching problems, looking at answer options and saving time. She struggled a bit with several math problems, and needed some assistance figuring out what steps to take to set up equations, factor, and use answer solutions. As we did problems, I made notes on some of her most repeated mistakes and struggle points, such as being careful with signs, recognizing quadratic equations and factoring opportunities, and paying attention to how each problem was presented. At the end, I wrote a more formal list of these top issues, for her to have with her as she continues to study. I encouraged her to look back to the list while doing math problems in order to avoid making errors. Before our second session on Friday, I asked her to complete a full diagnostic test, one of each section, either on the website or in her book. I asked her to focus first on answering each problem to the best of her ability and less on time, which we will address later. On Friday, we will spend part of the session targeting the problems she got wrong or did not know how to do.
