HSPT Tutoring review by Steven in Midlothian, IL
We covered the writing section of the ACT. We worked on how to set up a 5-paragraph essay with special attention to the intro paragraph as well as paragraph four--rebutting the other side's argument. Once the student started using the different writing formulas his writing improved dramatically. I am sending him two practice essays for him to work on between now and Thursday.

HSPT Tutoring review by Matthew in Midlothian, IL
The student read a chapter in the review book for homework to get a basic idea of the approach he should take for the Science section. We began by studying the basic strategy of finding passages ("now" passages) that were not too difficult to understand and doing those first. We discussed looking at graphs and charts before doing the questions in order to understand relationships between variables, and how one variable affects another. We also discussed not reading long introductions or discussions of experiment procedure unless specifically asked in a question. He had a hard time understanding the scientific terms, but eventually discovered that the questions can be done without understanding them. We did three full drills in the book and covered two chapters. For the remainder of the session we did English and Math problems from the full tests at the back of the book. The student has already shown a dramatic improvement in English -- in the passage he did (15 questions), he missed only two. In math he didn't do as well, but I suspect this is because he was rushing. For homework he will read a full chapter on Reading to prepare for tomorrow's session.
