The student is doing so much better with Science and English now. She has gone from a 13 to a 25 in science, and all but one of the questions she missed on her last test were due to silly mistakes or misreading the question. These are relatively simple fixes, so she's pretty excited. She continues to get a better feel for English, which is the most important next step now that she's no longer hung up on grammatical issues. We went through the parts of the practice test she had for homework and spent the rest of the time tweaking her English skills.

We started this session by reviewing the essay I had the student write for homework. It was a well written and thoughtful essay, but needed some work. I explained that in the case of this test, it is best to not chose best on personal feelings for the topic but what can be easily argued and supported. We then talked about using specific examples to support the thesis and to avoid being too general. His punctuation and grammar was excellent. We then looked at an English passage which he did very well on then 20 math problems. He had some trouble on these and went over a few equations he should know in order to solve some of these problems. We finished the session by doing two reading comprehension sections.

The student and I reviewed the results of exam practice test 3. She scored a 29 in English, an 18 in math, and a 24 in reading. In English, she needs to work a little more on clear and concise writing, specifically on eliminating redundant portions of sentences. Although we were concerned with her drop in math, upon reviewing the test it became clear that she was just having a bad day. She understood the concepts but had made some silly mistakes. In reading, she struggled with the social sciences and natural sciences passages. I will photocopy more of these for her so that she can get some more targeted practice.

The student and I focused on math today. Going through the concepts, especially the harder questions together, showed that he seemed to have forgotten how to do many of the problems. We went through the problems and backed it up with conceptual lessons so that he would be able to reproduce his work later. We backed up the math practice with a grammar and science review. Since we are basically finished with this book, I will be bringing new material to work with next time we meet.

On Thursday, we reviewed college algebra, geometry, and trig problems as well as the English and science sections of her most recent practice ACT. The student seems much more confident in her test-taking skills and much more easily navigates her way through the problems. On Saturday, we reviewed the math section of the practice test she had just completed. The student had finals this week so she mentioned that she hadn't spent as much time on her ACT practice test as normal. For the science section, we talked about how much of the text she really needs to read, contrasting the graph/data section to the opposing viewpoint one. For the English section, we reviewed the key ideas of being concise and not adding irrelevant information.
