Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

West Covina, CA Test Prep tutoring
In this session we worked through questions from the practice exams in the college study guide for math, reading and writing. The student has improved a lot in the writing section. She is able to spot errors accurately and explain the grammatically correct alternative. She is very good with detail questions. In reading, we covered some strategies in how to read passages (not reading for content but how the author is stating his/her argument).

Today the student and I covered the improving sentences part of the writing section. I explained to the student the format of the section, as well as the various commonly tested rules, such as awkwardness, run-on/incomplete fragments, wordiness, noun-pronoun, concise + keeping the meaning the same, etc. Afterwards, I walked him through a practice writing section test, working with him questions by question on both the identifying sentence errors section, as well as the improving sentences error section. Although the student struggled initially over recalling the various errors associated with verbs, nouns, pronouns, and parallel sentence structures and comparison, over the course of the practice he was able to better associate the errors associated with each part of the sentence. The student still had a little bit of trouble identifying the verbs in the sentence, but he is definitely better at it than our last session. He hesitated most with being able to justify picking one choice over another for the improving sentences part of the test, so I used a step by step approach to help him eliminate as many of the choices as possible before selecting the best choice - 1. check for awkwardness and wordiness in choices and eliminate them 2. check for fragments/run ons and eliminate them 3. check for concise wording and make sure there is no further error in that choice. By doing this for every question, he was able to eliminate around 3 of the 5 possible choices. I left another set of practice improving sentences questions for the student to do at home.

This session, we reviewed SAT math and the math problems that the student had difficulty solving. We spent the majority of time doing this, and we reviewed fraction addition with different variables, such as 1/x + 2. He was struggling a little bit with it, but at the end we cleared up the concept. Also, we covered translating word problems into a mathematical expression. I think all in all, the student needs a bit more guidance on math to get him up to speed with the math concepts that he needs to be proficient in for the SAT math, so I suggested him get an additional math tutor to help him with that. He has a very good and positive, eager to learn attitude, which is wonderful to work with.

Today, we finished up covering cell structures, focusing on cell walls, microfilaments, and enzymes. We went over some practice problems on that section and then went over practice problems on the cell cycle, genetics, and evolution. The students seemed fairly confident with genetic problems.

Today, we focused entirely on math. The student got a few questions wrong in the practice test. Some of this is due to actual content gaps, and we are working to fill those. However, some of the errors were on problems that he knew the math for. The problem was that he did not apply the knowledge he had to problems that initially seemed unfamiliar. I think we will need more sessions to prepare him for the test.

Today, we formed a study plan for the SAT. The major components of this plan include: completing four practice tests, reading and doing practice problems, and completing the prep book practice test. We also set up tutoring sessions on Sunday and Thursday evenings. Sunday tutoring sessions will be dedicated to reviewing full-length practice tests and discussing missed problems. Thursday tutoring sessions will be dedicated to answering questions about the topics covered in the prep book as well as reviewing math concepts. We also discussed several test-taking strategies and addressed some of the student's major testing concerns.
