Tutoring review by Derryen in Covington, GA
Today the student and I discussed the difference between functions and relationships. We went through a packet with problems from the chapter and worked through each question. The problems mostly consisted of plugging in x values (inputs) to determine the y values (outputs), graphing the given coordinates, and stating the domain and range. The student sometimes has difficulty approaching new problems, even if he has successfully done similar problems before. What I emphasized today is that, although the problems may look different, the methodology he uses should be exactly the same. I told him that when he sees something he doesn't know to make a minute, step back, and see if it is asking something similar to another problem. With practice, his confidence will increase to the point where he is able to conquer problems he hasn't seen before without hesitation. I left him a few problems to work on before our next session, which touched on every concept we covered today.

The student solved homework problems involving probabilities and percentage changes. The most interesting case was the comparison of test scores between New Jersey and Nebraska students, divided into white and non-white. The overall average was higher in Nebraska even though both averages were lower in Nebraska. Finally we went over the problems with percentage change that were there on the first quiz. Since the student's performance was only average on the quiz, we went deeper into percentage change problems, and how to set them up with the base.

As they are still comfortable with what's going on in class, I went ahead to new topics in today's session. We discussed quadratics. They both had some familiarity with them, but they both needed to be refreshed. After some basic problems, we discussed-- how to factor them; what the purpose of factoring them was, and how it related to other things they had done; the method and process to factor them; completing the square; and then deriving the quadratic formula by completing the square.
