I am a recent graduate of Fordham University, with a B.A. in Music and Philosophy. I have taken coursework in and have a great passion for all areas of learning, particularly in Humanities. As a Tutor, I have guided students through difficult texts and aided them with essay writing for three years. I have also tutored voluntarily, working with underprivileged youth, in SAT and college preparation. I am passionate about culture and the Arts; hence I teach a broad range of subjects, from Religious Studies to Music Theory. As my majors suggest, I am particularly strong with Philosophy and Music. What I love most of all, is learning new subjects for and with my students. My teaching style is dynamic. It's tailored to each student and subject. I work at whatever pace best suits them. I graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA in Cartooning and Illustration. I dedicate at least an hour (usually many more) each day to writing and illustrating comics. In addition to the arts, I am passionate about languages. I have spent much of the past three years to teaching myself Spanish. I pursued my interest in Spanish and language learning by receiving my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. This experience broadened my worldview and gave me a greater insight into language learning.I have experience teaching a wide range of students, from new learners to intermediate and advanced. I have worked with students one on one, as well as with larger classes with a variety of learner types. I did myundergraduate work in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.Since relocating to Manhattan from the West Coast, I've had the great fortune to teach in a variety of settings-- from privatetutoring, to lead teaching at ESL Language Schools, to leading literacy-based theater residencies in the public school system. My earliestteaching experiences were in college-level English and ESL-- I'm a CELTA-certified ESL teacher, and have always been passionate aboutlanguage and literacy. In recent years, however, I've also been working more and more on privately tutoring Language Arts, Humanities,and Test Prep (SAT, AP, TOEFL) with students at the middle and high school level. Once we uncover what we don't know, we can begin to understand what we need to know. As your tutor, we will break each lesson down into a series of small steps to help you understand the concept and not to simply find the answer and move on. We will work together to help you store each step in your memory, practice, and then solve. Once you begin to feel confident and solve on your own by a series of small steps, what used to be difficult will become easy!

During my undergraduate years at Miami University where I achieved a Bachelor's Degree in Science as well as my time in medical school at Rush University Medical College where I will soon receive my Doctorate of Medicine, I have tutored fellow students as a way to help out as well as a way for me to stay sharp with tricky subjects. Teaching and singing are my passions; training and coaching public speakers and performing artists my expertise. I grew up with a musician and a frequent public speaker for parents, ending up with strong talents in both. I enjoy telling people, "I majored in talking and enjoy a career as a vocalist, which is basically talking with notes and rhythms attached!" Studying communication gave me a solid foundation for engaging with and listening to the (often unspoken) needs of others. I get great joy from helping others reach their goals and overcome their presentation fears which often block their success. I believe every person has the capacity to learn and grow skills at any pinnacle of life. My philosophy includes the strong belief that gentle honesty is the kindest offering to be given to anyone, particular to persons putting themselves up for public scrutiny or digest as performing artists or public speakers. I have a history of working in accessibility and research in the arts and am interested in creating dialogues on the ways in which the arts—and the ways our businesses and government support the arts—are an essential component of our everyday lives. To quote Jane Chu, “Although many may not realize it, the arts actively intersect with areas such as the economy, human development, and community vitality. The arts and artists are an integral part of the solution to the challenges we face in all parts of our society.”I am also interested in international arts policy, having visited over 25 countries while living and working abroad for more than four years. I am passionate about exploring the ways that the arts can unite disparate cultures and communities.I previously served with AmeriCorps*National Civilian Community Corps: Southwest Region, focusing on disaster relief and community development, and later spent three years working internationally with underserved students.
