Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Carolyn in Waltham, MA
We went over the 5th math practice test, where we talked about avoiding simple, correctable mistakes.  Then we went over the first half of the 3rd science test, where we're focusing on timing and picking which questions are worth skipping.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Susan in Waltham, MA
The student and I worked through a new practice math section she had just taken. We spent a lot of time on algebra, the number line, operations with negative numbers, order of operations, and ratios. She is doing a good job of applying her math skills, using the strategies we'd discussed (plugging in answer choices to algebra problems starting with C), and judging when to skip a question rather than guess.     We also discussed concerns the student and her mom have about timing on the verbal section. The student has been diligently applying the verbal strategies we've been working on, and it has slowed her down to the point where she only finished half of her practice verbal section in the allotted time. I advised consciously applying the strategies only on the harder questions from now on, and I plan to do some research on effective time-management skills for that section.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Jeremy in Waltham, MA
Today, the student and I began by reviewing his performance on two practice tests I had sent him prior to the start of our session. Overall, he did reasonably well on both tests indicating to me that our study regimen is working. On the Chapter 1 test, he missed problems relating to more obscure concepts; this does not concern me, however, given the fact that the final should generally be focused on only the key points from each chapter. On the chapter 7 test, he did very well overall. In order to bolster his understanding of these materials, we spent time reviewing information relating to the questions he got wrong on the test. We also reviewed his homework.

The student and I worked on his Friction II homework. Problems included a range of problems involving friction in combination with pulley systems, multiple reference frames, and systems involving ramps. His great understanding allowed us to cover a large amount of very challenging material within the session.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Zachary in Waltham, MA
The student and I met for the first time today. We covered how our 6 sessions would be broken down, his specific needs in SAT Critical Reading and Writing, as well as a preview for Math coming up later. We then set in, covering sentence completion and reading summary skills for the SAT. He has a firm grasp on sentence completion and can generally select the appropriate meaning of a vocabulary term picked out of a passage, but I still want him doing flash cards. Most of our Critical Reading work will be done learning to tease meaning out of an author's writings, and recognize how to pick out opinions and facts from passages.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Rebecca in Waltham, MA
On Wednesday, I helped the student understand different biology concepts from a study guide she was given in class. I had her start off by looking up and writing different definitions as required by her guide and then I had try and explain the meanings to me without necessarily using the same words. To help her remember the different concepts, I had her look up images of different concepts (chlorophyll, stroma, etc.) and even draw diagrams to help her memory. Visualizations really helped her and the second time I tested her understanding she had better thought out responses.
