Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Physics Tutoring review by Emma in South Elgin, IL
During this session we covered torque. We discussed how to find torque and how it is an analogue to force in rotational motion. We reviewed what quantities had rotational analogues to linear quantities. We also covered center of mass and ways in which to find it. We discussed static equilibrium and how to use the knowledge that all forces equal zero and torque equals zero to set up equations to find the forces that are acting in a system.

Physics Tutoring review by Anna in South Elgin, IL
Student is continuing to work through the units on electricity. This week focuses on the pressure difference in a circuit and how it is necessary for light bulbs to light. She worked on worksheets that involved color coding parts of a circuit based on the pressure (potential) in that part of the circuit. She has been doing really well understanding the concepts of this unit. To confirm some of her hypotheses, we set up a circuit to test the brightness of bulbs in parallel.

Physics Tutoring review by Rick in South Elgin, IL
The student's class has begun studying magnetic fields, but not gotten too deep in this new topic yet. She suggested we focus on her homework from the previous unit which will be due this week - it is a large part of her class grade. We spent the session discussing the problems she was uncertain about and how to solve them... in particular, a circuit problem with emf sources in parallel and an RC circuit problem involving a transient current. We plan to tackle magnetic fields after spring break, in two weeks.

Physics Tutoring review by Joseph in South Elgin, IL
The student and I covered Magnetism and went over homework problems related to this topic. The first set of homework problems were conceptual, multiple choice type questions, which she recalled mostly from class last week. The second homework set had problems to calculate magnetic force, field, etc. using basic equations. She seemed to recall her classroom lectures well. Lastly, we went over a final review of Electricity and circuits, as she is taking her make up test since she did not take the test last week. We reviewed electric charge, force between charges, current, resistance, and voltage as they relate to simple series and parallel circuits. We also reviewed how to calculate power using these properties. The student showed a grasp for circuits and how to find equivalent resistances, etc.

Physics Tutoring review by Katherine in South Elgin, IL
Today we talked about the Divergence Theorem, and capacitance. The student was relatively comfortable with capacitance - it is something he's seen before, but now we're just working with slightly more complicated geometries. He had some trouble with the calculus behind the divergence theorem, although he did seem to understand the general concepts behind it. I outlined how to use the Divergence of a field in an integral to find the flux, and I showed him how to find the curl of a field using the determinant of a special matrix. These concepts seemed a little clearer to him at the end of the session, although he still needs to review 3D integrals and changing coordinate systems.

Physics Tutoring review by Daniel in South Elgin, IL
In this session we covered transitions between displacement velocity and acceleration. The student is becoming more and more comfortable with the equations of linear motion and is able to dissect word problems better. We went over which terms are scalars and vectors. I have worked on grounding these definitions with real world examples so he can better recall which is which.
