Algebra Tutoring review by Sara in South Elgin, IL
The student and I were able to cover general concepts central to Algebra. We reviewed equations with inequalities, and she completed many of my examples on her own, with no guidance, to ensure knowledge capture. We also discussed absolute values, where they might be used, their importance and many examples both with simple equations and more complex math. I also showed her how to graph absolute values, and she was able to quickly learn and synthesize the lesson and ask very good questions showing that she understood the next step in the lesson. We also reviewed some basic statistics, namely normal distributions, which she learned today in her math class. She was quite familiar with finding the median, mode, and mean of numbers sets. I was able to show her how to plot normal distributions, building off of her knowledge of scatter plots and variance in series. I showed her common trends and calculations with series, a few short cuts, and together we filled out 3 pages of notes for her to study on her own. I also mentioned daily applications where her new knowledge would be appreciated and applied, such as sports statistics, manufacturing qualifications, understanding average class grades, and various number sets.

The student is continuing to review for her upcoming quiz. She was given a review assignment which asked her to transition between point-slope, slope-intercept, and standard forms, as well as know how to find parallel and perpendicular lines. She has gotten pretty good at putting lines in slope-intercept form. We reviewed how to find the slope of a perpendicular line. Overall, she has improved quite a bit though.

We went over a couple of math quizzes the student had. Because she seemed to understand everything very well, we shifted our practice away from her material and focused on precision in her work.

Algebra Tutoring review by Hope in South Elgin, IL
The student seemed to be a bright boy. He did very well with domains and ranges and graphing coordinates on a graph. He needs to make sure that he labels everything (x and y coordinates, what y and x represent, etc.). He had a few questions left on his homework, which he can use for practice. He needs to study a bit more before his test tomorrow. He needs to concentrate on how to find the linear equation and understand fully what it stands for. I walked him through a few examples of evaluating linear equations and tried to help him memorize equations (i.e. m=slope= rise/run- (y2-y1/x2-x1). He just needs a little practice putting this knowledge to work! He was engaged and was paying attention the entire time!
