Greenville Middle School Tutoring FAQ
Middle school, which traditionally consists of grades six through eight in the United States, is an important transitional time in the American education system. It is also a tumultuous period, as students grow increasingly self-aware and test societal boundaries. It is a time marked by academic, emotional, and social change, and many students may struggle with schoolwork as a result. Varsity Tutors recognizes that there are unique needs when it comes to middle school students, and we can help you connect with a middle school tutor suited to the specific needs of your pre-teen.
Navigating middle school can be difficult for students and parents alike. Tutors can serve as mentors for students and as a support system for parents. From the first day of sixth grade to the crowning moment of eighth-grade graduation, a private tutor can guide your child each step of the way. Students must learn to organize their personal belongings as they move from subject to subject and teacher to teacher. Tutors can help your student develop methods to remember his or her assignments, books, and notes for his or her numerous classes in a schedule that can, at times, seem overwhelming. Is time management an issue for your child? Middle school tutoring can address this crucial skill and assist your child in developing key approaches to prioritizing school work in the most efficient ways. Students must also learn to examine texts critically and integrate information from multiple sources into bigger assignments, such as research projects. In short, they need to begin thinking in a way they will be required to in high school.
A private tutor can also be helpful in teaching your child how to study. Many students have no idea how to study, and this becomes a major issue in high school and college. If your child learns how to study effectively while still in middle school, they will be way ahead of their peers once they get to high school and begin taking more difficult courses.
Middle schoolers are also exposed to algebra, geometry, and probability for the first time. Whether your child is flourishing or struggling, one-on-one tutoring can help him or her remain engaged with the coursework at hand. A successful tutoring system rests upon the belief that the student-tutor relationship should reflect your child's specific goals, learning style, personality, strengths, and weaknesses. Middle school students learn best when content is clearly relevant to their own lives and the world in which they live. A tutor who is personally familiar with your child can provide educational support that is personal and tied to his or her interests. While the typical classroom teacher may not have time to equate a topic like percentages to baseball concepts like batting averages, a private instructor certainly can. Once your child becomes more interested in a topic, they are much more likely to want to spend more time studying it, which will in turn help them perform better in that particular subject.
Middle school tutoring is extremely convenient as well. Varsity Tutors' live learning platform allows you and your child to meet with a private tutor face-to-face online. This provides you with the flexibility to pick the time and location that works best for you and your child. Tutors can also travel to your home or another location of your choice, at a time you select, for in-person sessions. There is no need to forgo extracurricular or family commitments in order to make time for tutoring. Academic tutoring can offer your child meaningful, effective assistance on your family's schedule. Why wait? Contact Varsity Tutors today and let us help you and your child connect with the perfect middle school tutor.

Recent Greenville Middle School Tutoring Session Notes
We spent the majority of the time on Spanish. I brought along a book of Spanish verbs for her to copy out her current verbs. (She is a visual learner, and her textbook doesn't show full conjugation of all the required verbs.) We spent time working on exercises to review vocabulary and verb conjugation. We also began the worksheet homework for the next week (verbs with o -> ue). Current vocabulary focuses on food, movies, and outings. We reviewed the Middle East map for History and the moon cycle chart for Science. Both quizzes are scheduled for Thursday.
Today was our first session. We discussed ways to study, specifically doing math online extra homework, typing up notes for history and science, making up her own pretests, and organization in handing in materials. We also went over Math homework which included inequality problems and review of fractions.
Today, I mainly worked with Student 1 who was studying for his Religion test tomorrow. The test will focus on the Sacrament of Confirmation. To study for this, we read through the chapter and I emphasized major points and relevant pieces of information. After we had read a particular section a few times, I quizzed him on what we had read, asking him questions about the definitions and terms that we had encountered. He has a very good memory; he catches on very quickly and is able to retain detailed information about what has been read. At the end of the session, we completed the study questions for the chapter and I asked him more questions in order to further reinforce what he was learning in that chapter. I also looked over Student 2's math homework which he had already completed. He had to use a distance/time equation to find a variable, fill out a table, and plot a graph. All this he had done correctly and neatly.
Today the student and I went over her major assignments this week. We planned out which nights she would study for specific tests. She had a few assignments to complete for each class, so we went through them together. I asked her to explain to me how she would revisit the information before the quizzes or tests this week. She did well remembering how to study for math and English, but did not remember the best way to study for French. I reminded her of important study techniques for foreign languages - like flashcards and re-writing sentences or conjugations. Her grades are up this semester, and I think she has a lot more discipline and dedication to her studies.
Brief Review of 5 paragraph essays. Review of this week's reading assignment; the student is current on reading. We still need to review. Spanish - the student should bring home worksheets, etc. this Friday. Language Arts - the student should bring home worksheets, etc. this Friday. Flash Cards - reviewed 20 SAT vocabulary flashcards and gave to the student for daily homework; treat on Monday if she knows all by heart by next week. The student's homework: memorize all Amendments to the Constitution, memorize Statue of Liberty poem, know 20 SAT vocabulary cards by next Monday, and write an essay.
Tonight, we talked about and studied language arts. Specifically, we discussed cause and effect in writing, as well as recognizing purpose and genre in a work (entertainment, informative, persuasive, etc.).
