Mary
BA Indiana University-Bloomington
7+ Years Tutoring

Middle schoolers juggle a sudden jump in academic expectations across subjects, from pre-algebra concepts like integer operations to essay writing that demands real thesis statements for the first time. Mary tutored K-8 students in an after-school learning program, covering homework and study skills across every subject, so she understands how to keep students organized when six different teachers assign work with competing deadlines. She connects new material to what students already know, making transitions between elementary and high school expectations less overwhelming.

BA Centenary College of Louisiana

A biology degree builds a specific habit: learning to connect information across systems, from cellular processes to whole organisms, which is exactly the cross-subject thinking middle schoolers need when tonight's homework spans pre-algebra, life science, and a persuasive essay. Michelle's science and math depth means she can anchor abstract concepts in concrete explanations — showing why a fraction works the way it does, or how to read a data table in a science chapter — rather than just walking through the steps. Rated 4.9 by families.

I am a law student, but I took an unusual route to get there. I used to attend medical school but had a change of heart in my career path. Part of this was due to my political science major (double major with biology) in college as well as a number of Spanish and other courses that I took. Tutoring is something, I feel, that has come naturally to me, even back to my high school days. My goal is to help you learn as much as you can and reach your true potential. I will work hard to make sure that this happens, as long as you put in the work, too! We will work together to tailor your learning experience to your needs.

Payal
BA University of Miami

A physics degree means Payal thinks in systems — how one concept feeds into the next — which is exactly the skill middle schoolers need when pre-algebra, science, and writing assignments start demanding connected thinking instead of isolated memorization. Her math expertise runs deep (she teaches everything from elementary arithmetic through linear algebra and AP Calculus BC), so she can trace a struggling sixth grader's confusion back to the specific gap causing it and fill it in on the spot. Rated 5.0 by families.

I am an Environmental Biology major and Writing minor. Using my two interests, I find it easiest to help students learn complicated topics by being able to explain them simply and in your own words. I find that this way of learning is the best way to gain a full understanding. Difficult problems often have multiple ways of solving them. Figuring out the best way for each student to solve a problem can make anyone successful. In the near future I plan on attending medical school, and I look forward to helping other students be able to succeed in subjects that I feel passionate about.

I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I received my Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology with a focus in Cultural Anthropology and Minor in History. Prior to attending UCLA, I received an Associate of Arts in Communications Studies from Skyline College in San Bruno, California. In June 2018, after graduation from UCLA, I moved to Miami, Florida where I volunteered with the Americorps VISTA program, serving as the PeaceJam Coordinator at Miami Dade College. After my year of service, I stayed in Miami where I became a Middle School Language Arts teacher with Miami Dade County Public Schools. While I am an English teacher, and tutor a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about History, Sociology, and of course Cultural Anthropology. However, I love teaching Language Arts as I believe literacy and teaching students to express themselves through written communication is imperative to success in the competitive academic and professional context they are entering. One responsibility I was given this year is helping my middle school students at Horace Mann Middle School prepare for the Florida State Assessment (FSA). In my experience helping struggling students prepare for this exam, we always seem to have the most fun dissecting prompts and excerpts while prepping for the reading and writing portions of the FSA. I am a firm proponent of education, especially in the humanities and social sciences believing these to be necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading novels, historical texts, or anything that pertains to interesting aspects of human culture. For fun, I enjoy traveling (both domestic and international), exploring Miami, and enjoying a nice cup of coffee.

I am currently studying at St. John’s College for my Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts. St. John’s curriculum follows the Great Books Program which relies on primary sources instead of textbooks. During my time at St. John’s, I have volunteered as a tutor working with middle school students, focusing on Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. I have also tutored students in US history, Government, and World Religions. I have enjoyed tutoring English and Literature the most as I find it very rewarding to help students find material that they not only enjoy, but connect to and use to understand their own lives. In this age, technology has made information freely available to everyone. I think that it is extremely important to teach students how to find, processes and critically reflect on this wealth of resources. I find that it is equally important to nurture a student’s curiosity by demonstrating how lessons taught in the classroom can be applied to their unique passion. My own passions include writing, reading anything from philosophy to comic books, and playing video games.

I have tutored students previously, especially in college essay writing. Students that have been under my wing of guidance have gone to prestigious universities such as Harvard, Stanford, UChicago, MIT, Columbia, and more. Though I am most passionate about fortifying my clients' writing abilities by providing constructive feedback on their college essays, I also enjoy helping students with AICE AS Level/AP Language and History related subjects. In my opinion, it is in these fields of learning that we learn to properly analyze and digest information, which is crucial for success on final exams and beyond. I unapologetically believe that broadening knowledge emboldens individuals to achieve their goals.

I am a rising Junior at UM majoring in Mathematics and Economics with minors in Psychology and Education and will end up graduating with both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science. My drive to endure such a rigorous schedule comes from the competitive edge that I feel that I have. Being a four-year, three-sport athlete throughout high school and juggling this with multiple AP courses, I felt well prepared for my time at the university level; it also pushed me to want more from my university experience. In the past, I have mostly worked informally with students as a tutor. At the University of Miami, I have been involved in a club that travels to a local church and simply helps students with homework trouble they may be having. In addition, I have tutored in a formal setting this past semester when I helped a student before his Calculus II final. I enjoyed tutoring in this formal setting, especially in subjects that revolve around Calculus (i.e. precursors such as Algebra and Pre-Calculus and Calculus I itself). Additionally, I feel extremely comfortable with the content of the ACT! When working with students, I feel it is important to appeal to what the student is interested in and apply the subject to those interests. Because of this, I place a strong emphasis on understanding the student, including their hobbies and interests. I also feel that it is important for the student to trust me as their tutor and to know that they share in some common interests. Personally, I enjoy keeping both my body and brain active. Therefore, I enjoy any kind of team sport (being a volleyball, basketball, and softball player in high school), being outdoors, and reading in my free time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Middle school is a pivotal time academically and socially. Students in Miami often struggle with the transition from elementary to a more rigorous curriculum, managing multiple teachers and class schedules, and balancing increased homework with extracurricular commitments. Many students also face challenges with organizational skills, time management, and adjusting to a more independent learning style. With Miami's 18.6:1 average student-teacher ratio across 479 schools, some students benefit from additional support to stay on track and build confidence during this critical period.

In a classroom setting, teachers work to meet the needs of 20-30 students with varying learning styles and paces. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows a tutor to focus entirely on one student's strengths, challenges, and learning style. Tutors can slow down or accelerate based on understanding, reteach concepts using different approaches, and immediately address gaps in foundational knowledge. This targeted approach helps middle schoolers build confidence, catch up on missed concepts, and move ahead more quickly than they might in a traditional classroom.

Math and English Language Arts are foundational subjects where early intervention has the biggest impact. Struggling in these areas in middle school often compounds in high school. However, many students also benefit from support in science and social studies, especially as these courses become more writing and analysis-focused. The best approach depends on your student's specific needs—whether they're falling behind, looking to advance, preparing for standardized tests, or developing stronger study habits. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who can assess your student's needs and recommend the right focus areas.

Tutors working with middle school students in Miami are familiar with Florida's standards and expectations for grades 6-8, including the rigor of state assessments. Expert tutors can align their instruction with what your student is learning in class, help reinforce concepts from lessons, and prepare for district-level assessments. Whether your student attends a school in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Monroe County, tutors can tailor their approach to match curriculum pacing and standards. This coordination between tutoring and classroom learning helps students see connections and build stronger understanding.

Absolutely. Many middle school students have the ability to succeed academically but struggle with organization, note-taking, time management, and study strategies. Expert tutors can help students develop systems for tracking assignments, breaking down larger projects into manageable steps, and building effective study routines. These foundational skills are just as important as subject knowledge and often make a significant difference in a student's ability to succeed not just in middle school, but in high school and beyond.

Yes, preparing for state assessments and standardized tests like the FSA (Florida Standards Assessment) or CEFR assessments (for English language learners) can be beneficial. Tutors can help students understand test format and timing, practice test-taking strategies, and review key concepts. However, the focus should be on building genuine understanding, not just "teaching to the test." Personalized test prep with a tutor helps students build confidence, identify weak areas, and develop strategies they can apply across different tests and academic situations.

Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who match your student's needs, learning style, and academic goals. When getting started, share details about your student's grade level, specific challenges, and what you hope to achieve—whether that's catching up, getting ahead, or building confidence. Tutors can work with your student's schedule and learning preferences. Most students and families benefit from starting with a conversation about goals, then giving the tutoring relationship a few sessions to develop before fully committing.
