Lyons, IL Test Prep tutoring
The student was asked to pick out the math problems that she felt she could not do well or did not understand how to start. During our second-to-last session, the student and I primarily reviewed Mathematics, as she wanted to ensure that she could maintain or improve upon her practice score of 23 in that section. Before working together on practice problems, we reviewed some of the most fundamental strategies for the Math section, as well as when to use each strategy. These strategies included plugging in the answer choices, stipulating a beginning value for problems that involved only variables, estimating to eliminate unreasonable answer choices, drawing diagrams for geometry and trigonometry problems, and using the language of word problems to translate the question into an equation or mathematical expression. We then worked together on a set of practice problems covering a wide range of subject matter and difficulty. I emphasized how oftentimes a problem can be solved in multiple ways, so the student should focus on developing the skill to know which method will produce the best (quickest and most accurate) results on a given problem. As we worked through the practice problems, I noticed that the student's problem-solving ability showed significant improvement over her ability when we first began working together. Her recall of mathematical principles had also improved to a great degree.
