I agree with Henry Adams, who said, paraphrasing, that a teacher affects eternity because he can never tell where his influence stops. I have found that to be true from the statements of former students who have so stated. It's a gratifying feeling to see former students become successful, accomplished adults.... I use an interdisciplinary approach employing critical thinking skills.... Try to make the student comfortable and willing to talk, to determine his/her needs, and to...

West New York HSPT Verbal Tutoring FAQ
The High School Placement Test (HSPT) Verbal section can be particularly challenging for students. Not only does it evaluate your child's ability to navigate analogies, antonyms, logic problems, synonyms, and verbal classifications, but it asks the student to do so at breakneck speed, with a whopping 60 questions given over just 16 minutes. With such intense demands, your student may feel overwhelmed by this imposing section of the test. HSPT Verbal tutoring can help by using customized teaching methods designed to work for your child, as well as teach them proven test-taking strategies. With a tutor, your student can boost his or her performance on this important exam.
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a qualified, experienced HSPT Verbal tutor dedicated to helping your child improve on this section of the exam. Your student's tutor can analyze his or her current performance on the various types of questions found on the HSPT Verbal section and pinpoint the areas in which extra studying can most benefit your student. Does your child find it difficult to recognize synonyms, or need assistance with diagramming logic problems? Your student's tutor can help to identify where and why your student is struggling with these types of questions, and can devise an individualized teaching plan for your student. It can be hard to identify the most effective way for your child to study. The individualized approach to tutoring can be very beneficial in this sense because your child's tutor can help your child determine how they should be studying based on their preferred learning style.
This targeted approach is designed to strengthen your child's weakest academic areas, thus preparing him or her to tackle the HSPT Verbal section with greater confidence and an arsenal of strategies. In addition to helping your student develop and hone the academic skills necessary to succeed on the Verbal section of the HSPT, your tutor can also help your child learn test-taking skills specifically aimed at the kinds of questions asked in the HSPT Verbal section. Since the HSPT Verbal portion can be tricky, test-taking strategies can help your child simplify questions quickly, allowing him or her to answer more questions on the test with greater accuracy. By combining improved academic skills with these test-taking techniques, your child can navigate through the HSPT Verbal section with greater ease and confidence.
Because your child will not have a lot of time to complete the HSPT, it is imperative that they understand how to make the most of the time. An experienced tutor can assist with this by providing your child with tips that can improve their time management skills. This will help ensure that your child will at least have the opportunity to answer every question on the exam. This is an area that shouldn't be neglected when preparing, because it doesn't matter how well your child knows the material if they never have the chance to answer the questions.
Tutors understand that scheduling HSPT Verbal tutoring can be difficult with all of the other commitments in your life. Instructors have flexible schedules, so they can work to accommodate your student's tutoring sessions where and when it works best for you. If you can't meet in person, Varsity Tutors' live learning platform enables you and your child to meet their private tutor for a face-to-face online session. Recent West New York HSPT Verbal Tutoring Session Notes
Today we went over the reading section she did on her own. I asked that she do it just with a clock running instead of a timer countdown to see how long it would take her. She did quite well with the content, so we can just focus on strategy and timesaving devices from here on out. We also worked through some more difficult math areas, such as trig and log properties.
The student and I had our last session over the mathematics section tonight, covering matrix math, rational exponents and denominators, and arithmetic/geometric series.
The student completed the reading section for homework and did great! She is also doing well on the English and science sections; moreover, she is constantly improving as she becomes familiar with the test. Math is generally her lowest score, but she even finds this section quite manageable. My primary focus will be to review geometry with her and to have her ready to answer 60 questions in one hour.
The student and I focused on geometry. We covered supplementary and complementary angles, parallel lines cut by a transversal, interior angles of regular polygons, and special right triangles. We also started practicing geometry word problems with perimeter and area. Lastly, we touched on problems involving distance, time, and rates.
We worked through three more practice tests (one in math, one in writing, one in critical reading) to get a feel for what specific areas to target in each part of the test. The student is doing well with a lot of the math problems, but it will help to go over questions that deal with systems of equations in two variables, percentages, and basic number theory. On the writing side we should do some more work with subject/verb agreement and parallelism.
The student and I spent the first hour working on reading comprehension. I had her practice two long passages. First, I reminded her of the question-labeling and keyword strategy, and then I had her reword the questions and come up with her own answer before choosing an answer choice. In the second hour, we reviewed basic grammar concepts to watch for in the multiple choice writing. We practiced 8 questions of each type of writing questions and did writing exercises in conciseness, parallelism, and modifier placement.
