If you feel that your young student could benefit from taking a WPPSI prep course, Varsity Tutors offers private WPPSI classes that could help them work toward their academic goals. WPPSI stands for Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, the standard IQ test for young children currently in its fourth edition. Some private and independent elementary schools use this exam as an admission test, so you might want your student to perform well on it. If so, enrolling in a WPPSI course may equip the student in your life to pursue academic success!
The WPPSI is not a standard academic test, so the primary function of a WPPSI prep class is to familiarize a student with the "subtests" that comprise the exam. The bulleted list below lists them all for your convenience:
WPPSI Subtests
- Block Design
- Information
- Object Assembly
- Picture Naming
- Receptive Vocabulary
- Coding
- Comprehension
- Matrix Reasoning
- Picture Completion
- Picture Concepts
- Similarities
- Symbol Search
- Vocabulary
- Word Reasoning
The first five on the list above are taken by all test-takers, while the rest are administered only to students age 4 and up. Here is some more information about the WPPSI exam:
WPPSI-IV Overview
| Detail | Info |
| Age Range | 2.6 - 7.7 years |
| Qualification Level | C |
| Core Completion Time: Ages 2.6 - 3.11 | 30-45 min |
| Core Completion Time: Ages 4.0 - 7.7 | 15-60 min |
| Scoring Options | Q-global or hand scoring |
| Scores | FSIQ, Primary Index Scores, Ancillary Index Scores, and scaled subtest scores |
| Report Options | Score Report, Interpretive Report, Combination Report |
That's a lot of information, but some of it may not make sense to you. What's an "Ancillary Index Score?" Enrolling your student in one of our WPPSI prep classes gets you access to a knowledgeable expert who can answer any question you have. They can also point out how you can help your student prepare for the test. For example, getting a good night's rest the night before may help your student reach for their academic potential. Also, eating a healthy meal beforehand can help ensure that hunger doesn't create an unwanted distraction.
A private WPPSI class teacher may also be able to adapt WPPSI prep courses to your student's unique learning style. For example, vocabulary is often a focus of WPPSI prep because it is one of the few truly academic skills actually tested. A visual learner might want to study flashcards with pictures on them to add new words to their vocabulary, while a more auditory learner might get more out of hearing new words used in conversation. Large WPPSI courses often lack this level of flexibility, making them inferior to our product offerings.
In addition, a private tutor may be able to get to know your student on a personal level. If they love Disney characters, Disney characters may appear in their WPPSI course to make studying seem more fun. Students tend to learn best when they find what they are doing engaging, so why not try to help them enjoy their WPPSI class?
At Varsity Tutors, we strive to make sure that attending WPPSI prep courses is as easy as possible. All of our classes take place on our exclusive Live Learning Platform, giving your student the benefits of face-to-face instruction without the logistical nightmare typically associated with private instruction. We also try to match every client with an instructor who can meet your scheduling needs. After all, who wants to rearrange their entire life just to fit standardized test prep in?
If you are interested in learning more about the benefits of taking a WPPSI class with us, reach out to Varsity Tutors today for more information. Educational Directors are currently standing by to answer any questions you may have!
