At this session, we began by reviewing the successful reading strategies we had practiced at our last session; the student reported that she had been doing better in school, including reading, since our last session. We chose two passages to read from the SAT study guide. We stopped after each paragraph (and sometimes within a paragraph) to discuss. She asked good questions about the meaning of certain words, and I encouraged her to guess from the context and do the best she could with the knowledge she has, a skill that she will need on the test. When we were done, we went back and I helped her define some of the words. The further we read, she wanted to rush ahead without discussing, or gave short summaries of the paragraphs and was reluctant to re-read them to get a deeper understanding. However, she was able to get through both readings in one sitting without giving up. This is the first time she was able to do so at one of our sessions, and we both observed that this was a success. She was able to answer about half of the questions correctly on her own, and narrowed down most of the other questions to two possible correct answers. After this, we discussed a writing assignment from one of her teachers, giving her opinion on the changes to the SAT. I helped her clarify her position, and give logical reasons for the points she was making. Based on this discussion, and further discussion with her father, I was able to understand that because of her experience in the French educational model, the student has very little experience with multiple choice questions. She, understandably, finds it difficult to respond to literature in this way rather than through discussion or writing her own response. Next time, we will discuss strategies for answering multiple-choice questions, along with continuing to develop her reading comprehension skills and maintaining her focus while reading longer passages.

This session covered the second unit of the World History prep for the upcoming SAT. The unit we covered focused on the emergence of civilization (3000 b.c.e. -1500 b.c.e.) and metallurgy and the development of early civilization (3000 b.c.e - 500 b.c.e.). We specifically covered the invention of writing, the increased used of metallurgy as a catalyst for the development of civilization, the growth of empires, and the creation and spread of early religions across the planet. The prevailing focus of this session was the cross-regional impact and influence of a culture on competing cultures. The student noted that he felt more comfortable with this unit than the preceding unit. The student was specifically concerned about how the civilizations in this unit impacted neighboring civilizations. I explained in detail the time specific/ historical impact and ongoing impact on modern society. The student was left instructions to read Unit 3 of the SAT prep guide "Systems of Society and Culture: The Classical Age" and complete the unit quiz at the end of the unit. The reading goal is in preparation for our next session.
