French Tutoring review by Shannon in Geneva, IL
We worked on the student's homework assignment for tomorrow. She had new vocabulary terms to learn and translate, related to the beach/pool and activities you do there. We discussed weather conditions, taught her an idiomatic expression related to the weather and asked her to use it in conversation with her teacher in class this week. We also watched a video and had her answer comprehension questions about the video.

French Tutoring review by Connie in Geneva, IL
We reviewed a poem he needed to recite for his teacher called "L'Orange" and spent the majority of the lesson reviewing the pronunciation for the words and their meanings. "L'Orange" is about a child complaining that an orange is bitter and sour, whereas the father tells the child that s/he has eaten the sour peel instead of the juicy and sweet flesh of the orange. It's a metaphor not to judge a book by its cover. We then worked on correcting an assignment he had completed during our off time. He seemed to have some trouble with identifying the proper article to use for a corresponding noun. Some of his multiple-choice errors were just choosing the incorrect prepositional article. For example, in French, pool is feminine, so is nightclub. I explained to him that many feminine nouns end in "e" Many plural forms also end in "s."

French Tutoring review by Leda in Geneva, IL
The student and I had a great session today I thought, it was our first so we spent a little time getting to know each other and then talked about her French class (French 101). We went through her text books for the class, her homework assignment for the week, and what to review for her midterm coming up in a few weeks. She seemed to have a good grasp on learning the assigned vocabulary. She wants to get a better handle on understanding her readings, forming sentences, and pronunciation. We did some reading aloud and translating sentences and phrases. She did a great job working out what each sentence was saying. The student seems to really want to learn French and get more out of it than simply "passing the class." We talked about different ways to learn and retain information (reading out loud, making vocab lists, etc.). These assignments will go faster once she becomes more familiar with vocab. I think working with the student is very beneficial for her, it helps a lot to talk these things out with someone outside of class and identifying underlying problems and concerns. I think she'll do fine on her midterm and I look forward to meeting with her again.
