I am a graduate of Emerson College, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Media Production with a concentration in Writing for Film and Television. Since graduation, I have sought to put my writing skills to use in a number of fields, from writing short films and sketch comedy to blogging for the web. I specialize in tutoring writing and critical reading skills for English courses and test prep. Additionally, I work with students on general essay editing and college essays. As a tutor, I seek to work with students on an individual basis to firmly identify their strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their skills in the most effective fashion. Education at any level is a huge commitment, and I want to ensure my students get the most from their experience.

8th Grade Science Tutor • +21 Subjects

I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso. I double majored in Biology and English & American Literature. I have worked as a tutor for over two years with English as a Second Language (ESL) students at the high school level. I tutor Science (Biology, Physics), Mathematics (Algebra, Algebra I), and English. I enjoy tutoring Math and Physics the most because I see it like a puzzle that needs to be solved. I don't have a standard way of teaching; I prefer to meet with the student and adapt my manner of teaching to what works best for them. When I'm not working, I enjoy reading books, and if there is a movie adaptation I'll happily watch it.

I am a graduate of Syracuse University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and English, and am currently working on getting my teaching degree. I am most passionate about English literature and writing. It is my belief that words are the most important and powerful part of communication, and should always be used properly. I also believe that laughing makes the world go round, and that students learn the best when they are having fun. In my experience, students respond well to demonstration teaching. Therefore, I do my best to explain assignments thoroughly and to show students what is expected of them through examples. During my free time I like to read, go on hikes, and relax with a sketch book and some good music.

I am a published author and a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz (undergraduate) and George Washington University (graduate). I have extensive, practical experience in applying writing to the working world. During my academic career I was recognized with several awards, fellowships, and scholarships that acknowledged my achievement and dedication. But it was not always so.Truth be told, I struggled greatly through high school. This path taught me, on a personal level, that not every student learns the same way. Therefore, my approach to teaching and tutoring is centered around uncovering the unique challenges each student faces, and then helping them build a set of tools that will empower them to learn in any environment, whether that's high school, college, or the workplace.

I do my best to devote my time to things I enjoy!I am a recent graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where I received my B.F.A. in Drama with a minor in Applied Theatre. During my time at NYU, I studied at the Atlantic Acting School and the Experimental Theatre Wing, sang in a choir called Drama Cantorum, and co-founded a nationally-ranked improv team called Captain Soldier. I also spent an unforgettable semester abroad at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Nowadays, I work with a theatre company called Grey Room NYC and a non-profit organization called Leave Out Violence. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, playing and watching basketball (Go Bulls!), enjoying funny television shows (Louie is my favorite), and playing music (guitar & piano).I consider myself blessed to have a creative mind and spirit; I always endeavor to bring this creativity into anything I do. I am a big proponent of thinking outside the box. In tutoring, my motto is "teach a student to fish and they possess improved test-taking skills for a lifetime." Specializing in ACT/SAT test preparation as well as Mathematics, I carry with me, aside from a substantial knowledge of all subjects, a "bag of tricks" made up of pneumonic devices, preparation skills, and exercises in focus/concentration. With any session, my goal is to deconstruct seemingly difficult concepts into more digestible steps -- in essence working with the student to develop a strategy that is personal to them, for any person will retain information most effectively when they are able to describe it in their own words.

I'm a bit of a vagabond and love to travel whenever possible. I was born and raised in Chicago, where I lived most of my life until about five years ago when I moved to Miami by myself to finish pursuing my education. Soon after, I began my teaching career! There, I taught English for over two years to both middle and high school students.Since I can't sit still, I decided to advance my career, so I moved to Phoenix in August of 2014 to help open a brand new charter school. As a founding teacher, I assisted in developing curriculum, mentored the other founding teachers, taught all core subjects to sixth graders, and taught Dance as a STEM elective course to both sixth and seventh graders. Speaking of which, I have always been a dancer and have loved teaching it as well. I'm very active and love the outdoors. Although at times I miss home (Chicago), not a whole lot beats the 300 days of sunshine we have in Arizona each year! I love to read all types of books- especially comics. Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite comic series, so you might see those two pop up in our lessons now and then. Because I'm bit of a nerd, I'm constantly striving to learn more and am hoping that together, we will grow as modern thinkers and doers, throughout the course.Oh, and by the way, thanks to three older brothers, I'm a sports junkie and have always been pretty athletic. I love to laugh and smile and enjoy seeing the same in others. I can't wait for us to get started- and I hope you're all as ecstatic as I am!

I am currently receiving my bachelors degree from the University of Central Florida in the field of Technical Writing. While I do not have the degree just yet, come May it will be official. Past this degree, I am looking at working on a masters in Creative Writing. My tutoring experience mainly comes from my time in the Boy Scouts of America, especially after receiving my eagle award when many of the boys looked to me for guidance and help with their work. Past that, I have worked with my mother and her students (she teaches college math courses and tutors high school students), not to mention helping my brother with his work on any given occasion. I personally love to tutor anything to do with writing and reading as they are both absolutely fascinating worlds to work through and explore, even on an academic level. This sort of view is what drive my philosophy in that students need a good foundation before they can truly excel and enjoy the expansive world of language and utilize all it has to offer. My own teaching methods focus on the foundation of grammar and writing whilst also working towards all of the fun things you can play with past that initial step. My tutoring style to enforce this philosophy is to first learn about the personality of my students. Every person on Earth learns in a different way and should thus have a personal approach to their own teaching. I work with students to learn their own best style and figure out the sorts of lessons from there that would best improve their skills. Outside of academia, I spend most of my time backpacking, scuba diving, and playing video games should the weather not cooperate for either of the other two.

My love of teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning and building relationships. As a high school student with over a 4.0 and a college student who graduated with honors, I know how to work hard, and I know that hard work will pay off. Having spent two years as a high school English teacher, I am extremely knowledgeable of all kinds of learning styles, but I have learned that almost every student learns best working one-on-one with a teacher. Therefore, I love being a tutor!A certified 7-12 English Teacher, I specialize in tutoring English skills (reading and writing) for success in middle school and high school and on the reading, English, and writing portions of the SAT and ACT. I can assist older students on GED English preparation and in their English college courses. I provide relevant homework for students who desire it.I appreciate feedback (online or in person) from every lesson, and I will work to improve and change my strategies to meet your needs.I am extremely flexible. I will meet you at a place that is most convenient and must suited to your specific learning needs.I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!
