The student and I finished up discussing backwards word problems - a concept he improved on since the previous week. We then continued to discuss algebraically solving for variables within fractions. He fared very well at this task. Next week, we will work on dividing fractions from whole numbers.

We worked on the student's homework, which focused on subtracting fractions and word problems. When subtracting fractions, we had to work on converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions as well as finding common denominators. He caught on quickly.

Today we reviewed more building blocks to help the student reestablish her math foundations, going over complex numbers, converting between different ways to express a point in the complex plane, as well as arithmetic on complex numbers and complex conjugates. We also delved into polynomials, factoring them, and the multiplication, addition and division of them. Going through examples really seems to help things click that haven't been accessed in a while, and the repetition helps reinforce concepts for her. Each week we meet I can see her being more comfortable with the math in front of her.

Today we worked on colors. I brought colored pencils and let the student pick a color to color with. I then asked her what color it was and had her sound out and spell the word. We worked through this together, as she has some difficulties differentiating the sound of the letter from the actual letter. So when I ask her what letter starts the word "blue" she makes the sound for b instead of saying b. I also noticed she sometimes has difficulty identifying the letters and needs to look at the entire alphabet to pick the one she is thinking of. Additional practice will help make this process of sounding out and spelling words easier for her. She was very attentive today and we made a lot of progress. She enjoyed the colors and making pictures with them, and I think it was a nice change for her to do more creative learning.

We went over understanding resonance structures. The student had a really good grasp of them by the end of our tutoring session. She left with additional assignments, and we are meeting up again tomorrow before her quiz.

Tutoring review by Randi in San Fernando, CA
The topics covered today were adding and subtracting fractions which contained binomials and polynomials in the numerator and denominator. The student had a worksheet containing many problems which were completed. These problems are complex and involve multiple steps. He used his time today to practice each type of problem. After doing several problems together, he was able to remember all the steps necessary to complete them on his own. I have no doubt that he will do well on any upcoming test on this topic.
