Today, the student and I were able to work through most of a math section together. I think we accomplished a lot, including nailing down a couple of tricky formulas that he will need for the test. I think he's showing more confidence with problems, which will hopefully be reflected in the scores from his next practice tests.

The student and I used this session time to begin our review of the ACT. She previously took the "new" SAT on March 5 and is now preparing for the ACT. We began by discussing the primary differences between the exams and what she can expect from the ACT format. Perhaps the biggest difference between the ACT and SAT is in the ACT Science section, which departs from the Math-English-Reading format of the SAT. As such, we used this session to review ACT Science, working through passages on the ACT website. Our next session is scheduled for Thursday.

In the science section, we dealt with getting through the questions in an adequate amount of time, and general strategies for reasoning out correct answers. The student still needs practice with rationalistic if-then thinking in the science section, but she's gotten much better! I assigned another diagnostic (of her choice) which we will go over in the next session.

For this session we worked on math and English. For English, I focused on usage errors, primarily subject-verb agreement and pronoun agreement. We also worked on problems on relative pronoun usage, modifier errors, and verb mood errors. Next time, we'll continue this comprehensive review, especially with problems that have a more difficult to understand context. For math, we worked a lot on geometry and word problems. The student has gotten so much better at "translating" text into algebraic expressions. However, she should definitely continue to practice with problems like these, especially ones that require her to express multiple unknowns in terms of one variable.

The student and I started with going over the questions that he completed in his diagnostic test the prior week. We went over a variety of the questions that he had gotten incorrect. He was receptive to feedback and quick to understand his mistakes. He asked questions and asked for clarification when needed, and I felt like he was very engaged in the process. After we finished going over those questions, I had him complete a short geometry test. We then did the same format as before, going over the questions that he got wrong. He was again very engaged and active in the going over the questions. Finally, we did a few practice problems in reading, English, and science. We scheduled to meet again on Wednesday and to split our time between math for an hour and practicing the other sections for the last hour.

We went over system of equations math problems and semicolon/colon grammatical problems. The student picked up on the difference between semicolons and colons quickly, but she should practice system of equations problems this week so that she can confidently and independently solve them next time.
