Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student was having problems with quadratic equation word problems, so I helped her translate the problem, and then we factored it to solve the problem. As we were solving the problem, she made me realize that she was simplifying the radical and then we began to make sure she could simplify it correctly. Overall, I believe she understood everything."
"This week, we finished up the student's fundamental theorem of calculus packet in preparation for an upcoming test. Wherever possible, I drew out conceptually what each question was asking, since they were taught to do integrals on a calculator, and not yet by hand. Drawing out that we're actually finding an area under a curve helped solidify concepts."
"We reviewed for the student's test tomorrow. We covered solving word problems on projectile motion, solving quadratic equations by factoring, solving quadratic equations with the quadratic formula, and simplifying imaginary numbers. I left him with a few questions to do in his review packet tomorrow morning before school. He seemed to understand everything and is well prepared for the test!"
"The student was ready to go! We learned all about the letter C. We began by remembering the C sound, tracing the letter, and sorting pictures that begin with the letter C. We also colored pictures that start with the letter C. She did a wonderful job sounding out words on her own. I can see the progress she is making. She was even able to remember our word family, 'at' from last week to spell 'bat' and 'cat' on her own! Keep up the good work! For the second part of our session, we learned about night time animals. We read the book "Night Animals" by Gianna Marino. She took a picture walk to start and was interested in finding out more about our story. She demonstrates good knowledge of print- she pointed in the correct motion (left to right) and at individual words as I read aloud. We finished our lesson with a game about nocturnal animals."
"We covered Pythagorean Theorem, and he was extremely confident on the homework. We went straight through it without much effort. We also finished the assessment test review, and he has a lot of confidence to take it in the future. This session was a win!"
"The student and I covered commonly used syllables. She seems to be able to identify many of the sounds we have been practicing. She was very receptive and attentive during the session."
"The student had done a full practice test under time last week, so we spent this session going over it in detail and discussing the errors she made on each section. She will do another practice test for next week."
"Today we covered Lessons 7-10. In particular, the following problem subjects were covered: sums of arithmetic sequences, solving linear equations, transformations in xy plane, graphs of piecewise given functions, both graphing and finding equations from graphs, even/odd tests of functions, matrix multiplication, inverse functions, and solving linear systems using matrices. The student is on top of all these subjects."
"Today, the student did reading comprehension, where we reiterated the importance of reading EACH word carefully and not changing small words, as this changes the meaning. We did Science and History passages, and I noted a list of unfamiliar vocabulary that I will be sending to the student to study. As always, discussion of test strategies was peppered throughout the session, including reminders about not wasting time on names and quickly eliminating answers if possible. Math today included continued practice with increasingly difficult multi step Algebra equations and increasingly difficult multi step probability word problems. Additionally, we reviewed range, mean, median, and mode. The student can solve for each of these, but gets confused about which is which. I will be sending reinforcement practice for this."
"We focused a lot of this lesson on practical application of questions. By spending a lot of time on the spelling of words, we have been able to improve on our retention of the vocabulary that we have learned thus far. We also spent a lot of time on the demonstrative pronouns again and played two activities to practice remembering them."
"We started by discussing critical reading and time management skills. We practiced using these skills, and the student could answer at least 85% of the questions correctly without returning to the passage after the first peruse. Towards the end of the session, I encouraged her to practice at least once a day for constant improvement."
"We worked on Math today. We worked on a variety of problems, most of which the student answered correctly. We are going to work on more Math during our next session."
