SAT Math Tutoring review by Phoebe in Washington DC
The student completed all the assigned homework and did not have any questions that required reviewing. His content knowledge has improved with practice and the majority of any missed questions are due primarily to calculation errors or misreading the question. Today, we focused on timing. We did two timed full length math sections. This revealed a lack of knowledge relative to combinations and permutations (a non-priority question type). We dedicated 15 minutes to resolving this lack of knowledge and the student was performing markedly better on these questions at the end of the session.

We started right in on practice test 8, which she handled fairly well, especially until the word problems became more difficult. She knows the math operations but needs to recognize first steps to solving, as we discusses. She will complete math and problems in her other workbook. From there, we can focus on specific areas for improvement.

We went over his practice section results. My projected score based on his performance is around a 590. This is an improvement from his earlier performance where he scored a 550. When it comes to math, he still seems to be a conservative test taker so I am going to work on his guessing skills and confidence. We went over geometry today and covered special triangles and word problems with geometry. The student must take some time to commit some of the concepts to memory and that will help him get another few questions right (and one more question right increases his score by about 10 points). After tomorrow's session, I will schedule some light review for the student before he takes his SAT next Saturday.

We covered a lot today! We went through an entire test's worth of mathematics and the student picked up a lot of good test taking strategies along the way. She doubts herself less and she's able to do problems that she would have doubted herself on before. Very great session!

The student and I went over problems he had with the homework I assigned from last session. It seems like his biggest area for improvement is with functions and translating word problems into equations and formulas. As part of today's session we went over concepts from geometry, which he seemed very good at. I also assigned some homework for next time.
