We focused on math today. We worked through a variety of types of problems and found that the student is still a little slow with the geometry problems. He can figure out the solution eventually, so we really just need to focus on how he can answer the problems more quickly. More practice and some more incentive to solve them should help.

The student and I reviewed sections from a practice SAT (2 writing, 2 verbal, and 1 math) as well as discussing an outline for an SAT essay. Her writing skills are very strong and we only had to review some very picky rules in that section. In verbal, we really focused on how to eliminate answers that are almost correct except for one detail that makes them wrong. In math, we reviewed some tricky concepts such as "weird symbol" problems and how function notation translates to graphs.

Worked on Practice Test #5 from the SAT book. The student did great on the writing section, answering 30 of 35 questions correctly within the time limit. She actually had 5 minutes to spare. Proceeded with a math section in which she got most of them right. This was an improvement for the student and the questions she got wrong were extremely tricky or tedious, so we reviewed them together. I asked her to study the vocabulary and do some reading passages for homework because personal study is the best way to improve on the reading section.

Today was my first lesson with the student. We worked on constructing a generic outline she can use for any essay topic she encounters, did some writing multiple choice practice, and reading practice. The student's grammar skills are really good. I definitely believe that she can score well in the writing section. For reading, she identified that vocabulary is a key problem for her. She has flashcards that she will go through consistently to review her vocabulary. I showed her how everything has to be supported in the passage and I have high hopes for a score increase in reading as well with her knew knowledge of vocabulary and with dedication to practicing reading passages. For HW, I assigned 1 practice test and 4 pages of vocabulary.
