Latin is a great language to learn. Although it is not a language that you would use to converse with native speakers, as it is a dead language (meaning there is no native community of Latin speakers), it is still useful in many situations. First of all, if you are an adult learner and you are interested in taking language classes to challenge yourself or take on a new hobby, Latin is a great language to choose. It greatly influenced English, which means that there are many similarities in the vocabulary of each language. Students at the University of Utah or another university can also benefit from Latin courses, especially if they are studying subjects such as theology, medicine, science, law, literature, or poetry.
Many theological texts are in Latin, and many of those that have been translated to English were originally written in Latin. Being able to understand Latin can give you an opportunity to see the original version of these texts. There can be nuances that may not have been transferred to the English versions. In addition, Latin is the official language for communications of the Roman Catholic Church, and it is also the official language of Vatican City. If you are studying medicine or science, you will encounter many terms that were derived from the Latin language. The same goes for law students, as many legal terms were derived from Latin.
Latin was first encountered in the area where the Roman Empire was located, which was known as Latium. The most common form of Latin was Vulgar Latin. This was spoken by most people. However, as literature began to develop in the Roman Empire, Classical Latin emerged as well. This version of Latin was a bit different than Vulgar Latin in terms of vocabulary and grammar. It was also heavily influenced by Greek.
Over the centuries, there have been attempts to revive Latin, even after it died out as a spoken language. However, although it has been used in literature, the efforts to revive it were overshadowed by the emerging vernacular languages such as English and French, which were already classical languages in their own right.
What might I study in a Salt Lake City Latin course?
While Latin does have similarities to English, it is still an entirely different language. For example, word inflection is used often in Latin. In English, word order is used instead. In English, you would convey information about who is doing what to whom (for example: the gecko is eating the bug) by using the words in the proper order. In Latin, on the other hand, you would use word inflection to convey that meaning. It is important to know how to end a word correctly in order to convey the right meaning. Otherwise, your sentences can be jumbled and incoherent. Your Salt Lake City Latin course instructor can help you understand the right inflections to use.
Another thing your instructor might focus on is Latin literature and history. Your instructor can introduce you to Latin texts that are not only interesting but which serve as great learning material for studying the language.
Your Latin class instructor can also cover topics such as Latin nouns. Many Latin nouns and verbs are similar to English nouns. For example, 'desidero' in Latin means 'I desire' in English. Nouns in Latin are also gendered. This means that some nouns will be masculine, others will be feminine, and others will be neutral. Knowing the proper gender of a noun is important for being able to use the right adjective in a sentence and structure your sentences correctly.

You can also request private time with your instructor if you feel as if you need some one-on-one mentoring in order to correct problems you are having trouble with or ask questions that have been bothering you. We want to give students as many avenues as possible for improving their Latin.

I have a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. I am starting a part-time lecturer position at Paul Quinn College in the fall for General Biology I lab and lecture. I love to learn and teach. I read books, play board games, and do puzzles in my free time. ... I would find out what interests the student and try to find a way to incorporate that into the lessons, so that the student wants to learn.... Try to break down that skill or concept into skills or concepts that the student already knows.

He required more care, and for longer, than anticipated, but it was not a choice I would ever reverse. Compassion and patience, with recourse to humor, are certainly invaluable...
