What subject areas can I cover during Atlanta GRE prep?
The GRE is a computer-based exam (in most parts of the world) consisting of three scored sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. Each section is split into two halves, and the Verbal and Quantitative sections may appear in any order. You have three hours and 45 minutes to finish the entire test.
In addition, there are two unscored sections that may appear on your GRE: Experimental and Research. The Experimental section is unmarked and embedded into either the Quantitative or Verbal components of the test. The Research section appears at the conclusion of the test (if it appears at all), and you may choose whether or not you want to take it. Both sections exist only to test new items for future GRE exams, so there's no reason to concern yourself with them during your test prep.
Here is a closer look at what you can expect to see on the GRE's scored sections:
Analytical Writing
The Analytical Writing section consists of two 30-minute essay tasks. The first is an "issue task" requiring test-takers to compose an informative essay about a random topic from a list released before the exam. The second is an "argument task" that demands a critical evaluation of another author's argument. This section assesses your written communication, reading comprehension, use of evidence, and critical evaluation skills. It is scored on a scale from 0-6.
Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning section consists of two blocks of 20 multiple-choice questions each. You have a total of 60 minutes to answer Verbal Reasoning questions, but you cannot transfer them between blocks. There are three types of questions on this section of the GRE: reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence. Reading comprehension items are designed to measure how well you understand and draw conclusions from the material you read. Text completions ask you to fill in a blank after reading a short passage, choosing the option that makes the most logical sense considering what you've read thus far. Sentence equivalence items work similarly, except that you only have a partial sentence to work with and need to select two answers. This section is scored on a scale from 130-170.
Quantitative Reasoning
The Quantitative Reasoning section follows the same structure as the Verbal section, except that you have a total of 70 minutes to answer all of the questions. Items may involve arithmetic, algebra, data analysis, and geometry, and are written to evaluate your underlying understanding of mathematical concepts and quantitative problem-solving skills. There are three types of questions on this section: quantitative comparison, multiple-choice, and numeric entry. You may be looking for more than one correct response on any given question, so read carefully!
What are the benefits of each of the Atlanta GRE preparation options available to me?
If you choose an Atlanta GRE prep class, you'll study with a knowledgeable instructor and several other students on our live virtual platform. We vet every class instructor we partner with, so you can count on studying under the tutelage of a GRE expert who knows how to communicate with students. Your instructor is also available for private study sessions outside of your usual class time if you feel that you need extra help with a particular concept.
Many students are also surprised by the value that studying with others can add. This is true in the literal sense, as having multiple students to split the cost obviously makes it more affordable for everybody. However, it's also beneficial in your quest to develop a more comprehensive understanding of GRE topics. For instance, you can share test-taking strategies that you can fall back on if you're feeling stumped on exam day. Likewise, you can collaborate to come up with ideas you could never have thought of on your own. For example, looking over another student's outline could point your own thought process on how to tackle the question in a new direction.
If you prefer to study on your own, working with a private instructor may be a better fit for you. A tutor can take the time to understand your academic goals and then design study sessions around them to improve your study efficiency. There is also no set curriculum associated with private instruction, allowing your needs to dictate the pacing of every session. If you're having a hard time with something, your instructor can try explaining it differently until it clicks for you. If you find something easy, your instructor can quickly move onto another topic to keep your sessions as engaging as possible.
We also strive to make all of our services as convenient for busy students as possible. We offer both two and four-week courses to make it easier to find one that works for you. New courses also start every week, so it's always a good time to enroll. Similarly, students who want to work with a tutor can use our exclusive Live Learning Platform to receive face-to-face instruction online. You're also in complete control over when each session takes place.
