If you are a parent looking for Atlanta SSAT prep help for your student, Varsity Tutors can help you out. The SSAT is an important test for students who are applying to independent or private schools, as the scores on the SSAT will be considered by the schools that they apply to for admission. Professional SSAT preparation help can help your student become better prepared for the SSAT in Atlanta, Georgia.
The SSAT tests students on basic concepts and skills, such as reading comprehension and math. It gives schools a way to make an unbiased assessment of the knowledge that the student has of these basic concepts and whether they are likely to make a good fit for the school.
What will be covered on the SSAT?
There are a few different levels of the SSAT. There is the Elementary Level, the Middle Level, and the Upper Level. The different levels correspond to different grades. The Elementary Level is for students going into fourth or fifth grade, the Middle Level is for students going into sixth to eighth grade, and the Upper Level is for students going into high school grades.
All of the levels include Quantitative, Reading, Verbal, Writing Sample, and Experimental sections. The Middle Level and Upper Level versions of the SSAT have two Quantitative sections. The Experimental section is not scored. The Writing Sample will not be scored either, but a copy will be sent to schools that the student is applying to. The total testing time for the Elementary Level is one hour and 50 minutes, while the Middle Level and Upper Level versions last for two hours and 50 minutes.
The requirements for each section will depend on which level of the SSAT is being taken. For example, for the Writing Sample section, students taking the Upper Level of the SSAT will have to choose between two prompts and will be tested on concepts such as organizing a story or essay, their writing skills, persuasive writing techniques, and supporting a statement with samples. For the Middle Level SSAT, students will be tested on things such as their knowledge of basic grammar and spelling and their ability to organize an essay. For the Elementary Level of the SSAT, students will be given a simpler prompt. They will be presented with a picture prompt and asked to write a simple story that includes a start, middle, and finish.
For the Quantitative section, students taking the Elementary Level of the SSAT will be tested on things such as basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as other basic math concepts, such as place value and number order. Students taking the Middle Level of the SSAT will be tested on things such as algebra, probability, numbers and operations, and concepts such as geometric shapes and the mean, median, mode, and range. For the Upper Level of the SSAT, students will be tested on things such as coordinate and plane geometry, algebra, and data analysis and probability, as well as concepts such as line equations, circles and polygons, triangles, and fractions.
For the Verbal section, students taking the Elementary Level of the SSAT will be tested on concepts such as basic language, synonyms, and age-appropriate vocabulary. Students taking the Middle Level will be tested on prefixes and suffixes, word roots, and analogies. Students taking the Upper Level will be tested on things such as antonyms and Anglo-Saxon, Greek, and Latin prefixes and suffixes.
For the Reading section, students taking the Elementary Level of the SSAT will be tested on basic reading comprehension skills, such as the literal and nonliteral meaning of words. Students taking the Middle Level will be tested on skills such as making predictions, locating the main idea of a passage, and evaluating arguments. Students taking the Upper Level will be tested on concepts such as extracting information from the narrative and determining the author's main intentions.
What kind of Atlanta SSAT prep would be best for my student?
There are two kinds of Atlanta SSAT preparation that you can get for your student. Some parents prefer to enroll their students in an Atlanta SSAT prep course. These courses can take place over the course of either two weeks or four weeks, depending on the skill level of the student and their existing level of readiness for the test.
Students can benefit in many ways from taking an Atlanta SSAT prep class in Atlanta, Georgia. One benefit is that they will be able to talk with the other students who are taking the class. Being able to talk things out is great for increasing the chances of remembering something, as well as understanding it more clearly. These classes are given over the internet by a professional instructor. This means that students won't have to commute anywhere in order to enroll them in the class. Instead, they can take the class from home, which is very convenient.
At the same time, some students prefer private mentoring. Studying with a trained Atlanta SSAT tutor has many benefits of its own. Some students will find that they can study better and be more productive when they are in an environment in which they feel comfortable. Studying one-on-one with a person who can come to understand their learning style can benefit your students greatly. The private instructor can set up study sessions in such a way so that they match your student's learning style and the pace to which they are accustomed to. Some students learn things quickly, while others need to spend more time on things before they fully understand it. In a class, it is impossible to cater to the needs of all of the students, but with private instruction, it can be done easily.
A private instructor can also use fun and interesting learning materials to spice up the study sessions. This way, your student won't get bored when studying for the SSAT.
If you want to give your student the best of both worlds, you can enroll them in a two-week or four-week course while signing them up for private lessons as well. This is a great way to make sure that your student gets a comprehensive review of the subjects that they need to know for the SSAT while allowing them time to ask questions in a more relaxed and comfortable environment.
How can I get my student started with professional Atlanta SSAT prep?
If you want to get professional Atlanta SSAT preparation for your student, get in touch with Varsity Tutors. We can connect you with a private instructor or help you get your student enrolled in a class quickly.

Catherine: Atlanta SSAT test prep instructor
Hi, I'm Catherine! I have over eight years of experience working with students ages 6 through 18. I have an engineering degree from Georgia Tech and I am confident I can support you in your math needs. My passion for teaching has driven me to work hard to teach students in ways that match their learning styles.... Tutoring is student-led in that students are encouraged to ask questions, and I'll guide them to the solution.... Discuss expectations! We can't consider a tutoring session to be a success unless we have a goal in mind. The student and I (and occasionally their parent) will discuss what we would like to work on, and we discuss after a session what was covered.
