The student has started working on rotational motion. Her teacher assigned a really helpful worksheet on the topics as a way of getting her ready for actual rotational motion problems. This worksheet allowed her to think rationally about the concepts behind rotational motion. This is excellent, because many physics classes never explain the concepts behind centripetal force which causes problems when students are trying to balance forces later on. She did really well with the material and she is very thorough in trying to understand the concepts. This will help her so much when she starts working on actual centripetal force questions. We went through the packet twice just to make sure that the student could explain all of the concepts in her own words. After going through the worksheets, we talked a little bit about a lab they are doing in class. We talked about how to find the velocity of an object moving in a circle by using the circumference, and then plugging the velocity into the centripetal force equation. She did really well today and she seems to be grasping the concepts.

At this point in her class, the student is studying energetic systems. We used her class problems to guide the session, and I took her through a number of different problem types. I used each problem type to describe more generally how to think about conservative and non-conservative systems, and emphasized how energy and work are the same quantity. After running through about 10 problems, it was apparent that the student was already grasping the material. We dealt with gravitational, spring, kinetic, and potential energy, and discussed Hooke's law for force and Hooke's law for energy.

The student has tests on Tuesday and Thursday, on Chapter 15 - electric forces and electric fields. During our lesson, to prepare for these tests, we worked through some problems from the Chapter 15 problem set, doing at least one in each section that is planned for the tests. Topics included Coulomb's Law and electric fields, including the direction of fields relative to point charges of different polarities, and unit analysis, particularly on the Coulomb constant. Our practice included making sure that she shows her work step-by-step so that the grader can understand the reasoning behind her answers. She picked up the material quickly, and was enthusiastic and concentrated. For her exam on Tuesday, she will reread Chapter 15 in order to solidify her conceptual understanding, and finish the odd-numbered problems in the chapter. At our next lesson (Wednesday), we'll begin reviewing chapters that she could use help on, in preparation for the AP exam. I'm optimistic that her study plan will maximize use of her time to prepare for the AP.
