Chittenango, a village in New York, is located within the southern part of the town of Sullivan and is a part of Madison County. The name of the village comes from the Oneida phrase for Chittenango Creek, "Chu-de-naang," which means, "where water runs north." This is referencing the direction that the water flows from the creek's origin to Oneida Lake. The village originally incorporated in 1842 when it had around 900 residents, and now it is home to around 5,000 people.

Chittenango High School serves the secondary institution needs of the community, and the Chittenango Central School District administers it. Chittenango High has also been awarded a silver medal from US News for its academic program.

Just 15-miles west of Chittenango lies Syracuse, which has many respected universities and colleges. Chittenango is a charming village, and its sites and attractions will be sure to capture your imagination. The community is famously the birthplace of the author of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," L. Frank Baum. Chittenango celebrates this beloved resident, and every year, the village hosts a three-day festival called Oz-Stravaganza! to celebrate the famous novel. This celebration features a parade, local shops adopting Oz themes, and special cameos from actors who have appeared in The Wizard of Oz film. The All Things Oz Museum is open year-round, and this truly is a mecca for Oz lovers. The museum is located on the yellow brick road in the center of the village, and you can see the author's letters, family photos, contacts, and much more here.

A fun non-Oz related spot to visit is The Wild Animal Park, where you can spend an afternoon observing all sorts of exotic animals, including tigers, zebras, giraffes, alligators, grizzly bears, and many others.

Concepts: confidence intervals We worked on a confidence interval problem that was on the homework, and I explained what other types of confidence interval problems she might encounter in the semester. I taught her how to go from a formula to computing the actual answer.

Tutoring review by Erica in Chittenango, NY
The student and I spent this session solving literal equations. She knew how to solve almost every problem without prompting. The only problem she was stuck on involved solving for "a" in the equation a-ab=c. The only solution was to factor out the a, which was a concept her class had not covered. Once I explained this, she was good to go and didn't have much difficulty explaining to me why the solution was correct. In order to get her excited about math and to get her confidence up, I ended the session with a game of Five 5s, which she enjoyed. It was a pleasure to see her get excited about the enormous numbers she could create by manipulating five 5s, and it was great to have her play around with math without looking for the "correct" answer.

Tutoring review by Alec in Chittenango, NY
We worked on graphing points and doing arithmetic with negative numbers using the number line. We also worked on some geometry, identifying different types of shapes and calculating their areas. We then went over a few pages of reading for Earth Science, learning mostly about the scientific method. With the math topics, after a bit of working together on the early problems, the student picked up the topics quickly and was able to get through the rest of the problems without very much difficulty. He certainly seems to be able to learn these topics when he puts in the effort. Going forward, it seems like he will need to work mostly on keeping papers organized, using his planner to keep track of assignments, and getting through reading material that is less interesting to him.

Tutoring review by Lisa in Chittenango, NY
The student and I had an excellent first session. We started by working on some worksheets covering specific topics that her mother requested that we work on: GCF, LCM, prime factorization, and converting fractions to decimals. She did well with all of these. Then, we worked on word problems from a book that I brought. She has not done a lot of word problems in class, so this was very good practice for her! She is a quick learner and a great listener. She was a little nervous at the beginning of the session, but she definitely felt more comfortable by the end of the session.
