Phonics Tutoring review by Jessalyn in Michigan City, IN
The student and I started off today by reviewing yesterday's work and practicing distinguishing between the different sounds in words. Today we added in the "h" which makes "windy sounds", the "p" which is a "lip popper" and the long "e" which is a "smiling vowel". We put these letter sounds together with sounds he already knew to make the word "happy". The student has a lot of difficulty remembering the "h" sound, which I think is largely due to the fact that we rarely enunciates it clearly, but when I remind him that it is a windy sound which he can feel if he holds his hand in front of his mouth, he gets it right away. He picked up on the lip popper sound "p", lighting fast, and he remembers the sound "c" from yesterday without prompting at all. He was also starting to practice differentiating the starting sound in a word from the others completely on his own, which is absolutely fantastic. In order to start addressing his visual memory, the student wrote a Valentine's Day card for his parents. Using the program on my tablet, he practiced the letter shapes. I laid out his sandpaper letters for him to first practice tracing the letter on them, and then let him try to reproduce it on my touchscreen. He had the most difficulty with "s", but he got there eventually! Once he is confident writing the letters on the touch screen properly, I will transition him into writing them in the air so that he can develop the mental symbol imagery crucial to spelling, reading, and memorizing sight words. The student did really well sitting with me for the whole hour, and really enjoyed writing on my tablet.

Student two: He continues to recognize many 3 and 4 letter sight words appropriate for his grade level. We are also working on improving his lower case writing.
