Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Patricia in Melrose Park, IL
The first part of the session was spent on the student's spelling for school; he had a test the next day. He had all but a few correct on the initial pretest. We practiced those and he quickly had them right. I checked them again at the session's end, and he still knew them. The remainder of the session was used for test prep. The student did four exercises in one of the test workbooks that he bought. As before, he was rather efficiently. He typically reads and understands the passage well and can recount it to me fairly accurately. As always, he worked hard and was very pleasant throughout.

Phonics Tutoring review by Abby in Melrose Park, IL
In this initial session I began by assessing the student's reading strengths and areas for improvement. We began by reading something of her choosing, "Amelia Bedelia", and having her retell the plot. She read with good inflection which reflected an understanding of the material. We read "The Hidden House" (level S) and she scored 46.3 WPM fluency. She did well on the comprehension questions. On "The Reading Chair", level T, she scored 51 WPM correct and didn't require any assistance to answer the comprehension questions correctly. It seems that she struggles most with reading fluency, and that this likely impedes her interest in reading. For next week, I've asked her and her mom to choose a chapter book that we can begin reading together over the long term, hopefully choosing something that she will be interested in and engaged with.

Phonics Tutoring review by Rebecca in Melrose Park, IL
After evaluating the student's verbal reasoning abilities, I recognized difficulty recalling supporting details. Based on this, we conducted a close reading of a story and annotated along the way for mood, characterization, and purpose. I questioned the student periodically, prompting him to support his claims with textual evidence. He used his annotations as clues to build confidence extracting the details which contributed to his understanding. After this, we looked at the history of the text in order to discuss the text's allusions and historicity. Finally, we reviewed participles.
