She worked to create a cohesive and chronologically sensible essay and focused on addressing the core of her essay, which is her heritage. She also worked to complete a college supplemental essay, and working to improve the depth of her comprehension of the topic at hand and the personal meaning it holds for her. I finished our session by just answering some of her questions about the whole college admissions process.

The student and I wanted to ensure unity in her voice and ideas throughout her entire essay. We broke our goal into three parts: check voice and ideas in the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. Since our last session, she had rewritten her introduction. It had a lot of great imagery, but the ideas it contained needed to be melded into the flow of the rest of the paper. She rewrote it to include a compare-contrast organizational structure. This structure built a lovely bridge into the body of her paper. Even though she didn't finish getting through the body, we set a solid vision for the direction of the rest of the paper. The conclusion will focus on her goals for the future. She said she feels really great about the essay so far. She said she is proud of everything she accomplished. She asked for another session on Monday because she has a college application deadline quickly approaching!

In our last session, I guided the student as he wrote about the historical fiction book he just completed. He had an assigned packet that needed to be completed. He worked on a question about the message and theme of the book. I listened as he expressed his ideas, and asked questions to help him dig deeper and come up with examples from the text that supported his ideas. He then wrote his answer in the packet. The other section we worked on was an outline of the story parts, including the setting, characters, main events, and resolution.

We reviewed the student's homework and went over strategies to solve the problems that he completed incorrectly. His attitude was very positive. We went over strategies to take our time and spend time working out the entire problem before selecting the correct answer. I did see scores for homework and he seemed to improve on his homework. He just needs to use the strategies that I have been teaching him in order to not make mistakes. In reading, he read to me for 20 minutes. I helped him with decoding words. We also worked on fluency while reading in order to understand what he has read. I left a comprehension strategy with him that allows him to break down everything that he has read in order to completely understand what he has read. The comprehension map can really help him remember what he has read and to make sense of it all.

I introduced Student A to the letter R. We read a short picture book about things that start with R and also completed a worksheet with pictures and writing practice. Student B set goals for himself today that he would complete the new book we started in the next two weeks. He read several pages of the new book all on his own. The book was harder than the previous and had more words per chapter, but he was determined to get through it.
