Math Tutoring review by Christopher in Orland Park, IL
I began with a rigorous review, having him sit down and write out rule patterns so that he might better remember them. We continued with his chapter 6 review, and we made it up through solving radical equations. His math skills are about where they started, mostly due to the fact that he cannot remember rules for specific cases. To alleviate this, I've assigned him with writing down patterns of rules for our next meeting.

Math Tutoring review by Kori in Orland Park, IL
Studied for a math test on multiplying and dividing factions and mixed numbers. The student practiced many problems. She knows that mixed numbers must first be converted to improper fractions and that divisors must first be flipped and then multiplied. She is also getting better at recognizing when fractions need to simplified, but often does it in multiple steps instead of first determining the greatest common factor. She has also learned to use long division with remainders to convert improper fractions back to mixed numbers. We finished the session by attempting more complicated problems such as solving for y when y is given as a function of x and solving for an unknown number in a product by dividing both sides of the equation by the other number in the product.

Math Tutoring review by Cheryl in Orland Park, IL
We reviewed Singapore math - multiplication of fractions, mixed fractions, multiplication of three fractions, and using the cancelling strategy. Progress was observed in the results of his in-class assignments. I left him with ten worksheets with a variety of fraction multiplication problems. His assignment is to complete at least one worksheet per day. He said, "[He] liked being able to solve the fractions easier using the cancellation method, and by using the "new" division strategy to simplify an improper fraction.

We worked on the application of deductive reasoning to the proving or disproving of conjectures. The student has definitely improved in deciding whether or not a conditional statement as a whole is true or false. At first, she had questions about the differences between the truth values of the conditional as a whole versus the truth values of its parts. After I went over all of the possibilities in a table format, she seemed to understand it, which may be a strategy I adopt in the future for explaining things. In addition, we went over the quiz from last time, going question by question and having her explain why something was or was not correct. That seemed to help too. We plan on meeting again on Monday in order to go over a study guide. Hopefully, once we go over everything we have done so far, she will begin to make even more progress.
