Math Tutoring review by Sara in Glendale, AZ
The student has her final in a little less than two weeks. We went over part of a review packet, which included real numbers, absolute values, solving systems of equations, mixture problems, and graphing inequalities. The class is now done with logarithms and is beginning with conics. I explained to her the formula and corresponding graphs of parabolas. I also defined the focus, vertex, and directrix for her, as well as key values, h, k and p. I told her how to graph parabolas from the standard form of equations and how to identify the equations of parabolas from graphs. She learned this quickly after a lengthy step-by-step review, and she was very patient and ready to learn. We also reviewed the standard equation for a circle. We also reviewed examples of equations for circles and parabolas which do not seem to fit the standard form, and she understands that completing the square and rearranging the equation to a more transparent form is necessary.

Math Tutoring review by Elana in Glendale, AZ
We reviewed 6 of the 7 sections in chapter 11 involved with factoring quadratic equations. The student is able to solve the more straightforward problems but has some difficulty when the problems are more complex or presented in a different format. I encouraged him to continue practicing factoring problems where the coefficient of the 1st term and constant terms have multiple factors. Mastering this technique is a matter of repetition. As he does more problems, he'll be able to quickly recognize the type of problem presented and should be able to anticipate the answer.

Math Tutoring review by Christopher in Glendale, AZ
The student is taking a fast-paced summer course, which is going through the second half of a standard college freshman/high-school senior calculus textbook. We met after his first day of classes and worked through a set of homework problems, which turned into a quick review of the whole section of problems on convergent/divergent sequences. I tried to solidify first off the distinction between a *series* (plus signs) and a *sequence* (commas), because convergence is a little different for both and they're both important and because they relate to each other (the partial sums of a series form a sequence; sequence terms can be added to form a series). Sequence convergence turns out to (mostly) be just limits and different growth rates. We went back through some pre-calculus too. We did a little hinting about series convergence, even though it was not on the problem set.
