Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Glendale, AZ Physics tutoring
The student reports that the physics test she took on Tuesday was challenging. It covered the work and energy units. He did introduce the class to momentum and impulse. The student and I had a conceptual discussion of these topics and she did not have trouble understanding what we spoke about. Eventually we moved into some practice problems which were definitely easier than the previous chapters' problems. She says that overall this unit does seem easier and she believes the next test will be more basic. She seems to really benefit from the use of analogies when I am explaining the more challenging concepts. Overall, she seems to be on top of the physics. We are meeting next Friday and may meet a few days after that to review for her test.

Today we covered circuits. Specifically we made tables for each resistor in the circuit, including its resistance, current, power, and voltage. We used Ohm's law and the formula for power. We treated circuits just like water through a pipe. Parallel circuits had the same voltage while resistors in series had the same current. I would stress that he should be able to apply these two concepts. This is where he had the most difficulty. The student initially struggled with total resistance, but eventually understood it after a few explanations. We learned to keep redrawing the circuits with equivalent resistances and breaking down the whole circuit into smaller pieces. The student was eager to learn the material. Overall, student dramatically improved in understanding circuits.
