Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Dylan in Glendale, AZ
The student and I finished a multiple-choice ELA test, which he finished almost perfectly. We reviewed and enriched a reading summary I had asked him to do, focusing on eliminating repetitive modifiers and adding effective connecting words (e.g. meanwhile, however, etc.). Next week, we will finish the listening/writing exam and read and write about a preferred sports article.

Our second session focused on a time sensitive memo as well as the next steps for her 100-day plan project. She is making great progress and we will continue to build on the tools covered in our sessions.

For the student's paper, we worked on clarifying the thesis statement and being sure that all supportive paragraphs refer back to the thesis. We also worked on creating a conclusion that restates the thesis in light of the support presented. We continued to work on some verb tense issues, cutting out unneeded words and repetition, and breaking longer sentences down into shorter, simpler clauses for clarity. This paper didn't have as many minor errors, so I'm hopeful that she is starting to create the habit of proofreading. She is beginning to break up source material more often with her own thoughts and analysis, and we will continue to work on doing this more and more.

Writing Tutoring review by Tess in Glendale, AZ
The student requested a meeting since she is going to have a peer review of paper #2 today. She got good feedback on paper #1 and is almost finished with that. For paper #2, which focuses on rhetorical strategies, she has to link in three course texts with an analysis of one of two inaugural addresses (either JFK's or Obama's). She chose JFK's, but was a bit confused by it as a starting point so, she wanted to discuss it. We reviewed the address, identifying key themes throughout, and she also determined the three course texts she wants to use in the paper. This paper is 4-5 pages in length. I've been encouraging her to outline her work since I think her biggest struggle is identifying how to structure the paper and incorporate in key points. She completed about a page during our session and requested another meeting, post peer review.

The student and I met to discuss what he would write about for his Common App essay. We brainstormed ideas for each of the prompts and eventually settled on writing for the coming of age prompt. We then discussed the structure of his outline for this essay. He is going to write a draft of it this week to send to me for review. We will meet next weekend to review his draft and make edits.
