Cicero Life Sciences Tutoring FAQ
The life sciences cover a huge swath of scientific knowledge. Any scientific subject that deals with living organisms falls under the purview of the life sciences. Life science courses or units often survey the issues which are more prominent areas of focus, and topics discussed may pertain to the evolution of life, the scientific classification of organisms, cell biology, anatomy, genetics, ecology, or other biological topics. Additionally, a solid introduction to the scientific method is typically included early in such life science courses. Biology, biochemistry, laboratory courses, and numerous other fields draw on a fundamental knowledge of elementary life sciences, often assuming previous exposure to foundational concepts without taking the time to review before starting more complex material. However, while life science classes are certainly widely applicable, they also can be intimidating due to the number of fields that they explore. There are so many vocabulary words to memorize when it comes to the sciences, and your tutor can also help with the memorization of these terms. Even if learning about scientific concepts and experiments comes quickly to a student, there will likely be certain topics covered in a life science class that he or she finds confusing. Whether your child is taking their first life science course in middle school, or you are having trouble with life science concepts in a college seminar, life sciences tutoring might be just the thing to help you or your child succeed with confidence. Varsity Tutors can help you find a tutor who will give you or your child the confidence and skills needed to succeed.
Private life sciences tutoring stands out from other tutoring options due to the degree to which it is customized to the individual requirements of each student. Our directors help you select the life sciences tutor who can best address your particular concerns. Many tutors specialize in or are employed in a particular field in the life sciences, so you can select the tutor whose knowledge base is best suited to helping you with the topics you are most confused by. Once paired with a student, tutors design a custom-tailored learning plan for each tutoring session, focusing on the themes and concepts the student needs to improve on to better understand the life sciences. The tutor will take the time to get to know you and your child on a personal level, which will help them create a custom learning plan. Because every tutoring session is one-on-one, each student can work at his or her pace and spend as much time on a concept as he or she needs to understand it fully. Tutors can provide encouragement and feedback, and can even utilize teaching strategies that appeal to each student's preferred learning style. Additionally, sessions can be scheduled to take place when and where it works best for each student. Whether you want your tutoring sessions to be held at the local library, your dining room table, or even online, your tutor is happy to accommodate! The online platform is custom created and will give you a worry-free session.
Making sense of the life sciences early on allows a student to progress to more specialized classes with ease. Hiring a tutor for a college course can help you stay ahead of the curve on subjects that you may need to brush up on. Don't hesitate to get the assistance that can help you or your child better understand the life sciences in an organized and low-stress way. Recent Cicero Life Sciences Tutoring Session Notes
We covered the final two lectures on the microbiome and metagenomics, and we thoroughly reviewed the study guide and review questions. We thoroughly discussed the following concepts: culture-independent methods for analyzing microbial communities, metagenomics, targeted metagenomics, shotgun metagenomics, the gut microbiome, anaerobic fermentation, vitamins B12 and K, nutrient absorption, short chain fatty acids, firmicutes versus bacteriodetes in the gut microbiome, leptin production, and the specific 2006 Turnbough et al. study, that detailed the metagenomes of ob/ob mice and how the mocrobiome effects obesity. We also explored several questions from Exam 4, to make sure the student understood the figures on the questions where she missed points.
In this session, we reviewed the material we had covered previously about population genetics, ecosystems, and other things relating to natural selection. The student understands the material very well and is getting prepared for his test on Friday.
We reviewed the circulatory and excretory systems. The student seemed to retain the information well. He is very comfortable with the circulatory system.
The student and I discussed human evolution, dichotomous keys, and protein structure/biological macromolecules. We began reviewing for his comprehensive final by working through the first two practice problems provided by his teacher.
We discussed vertebrates and vertebrate properties, which will be a topic for the student in biology going forward. Specifically, today we focused on fish, including the different types of fish and characteristics of fish.
I quizzed the student over biology terms and concepts and feel that he will be ready for his Biology assessment test. He didn't remember all the concepts, but I believe that he just needs additional review on his own before our next session and before his test.
