Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Physics Tutoring review by Steven in Cicero, IL
The student was making final preparations for his exam tomorrow on collisions, rotation, and linear momentum. I think he has a pretty good handle on the main material, so our focus was to give him tools and strategies he could pull out upon seeing particular problems on the test. I think if he applies what we talked about, along with his own ability to set up and solve problems, he will have a very good chance of doing well on the exam.

I met with the student this week to review a SAT II physics subject test with her. We completed about 20 problems and reviewed any that were difficult or that she had gotten wrong. The test covered a wide variety of subjects including electricity, magnetism, kinematics, gravitational motion and much more. While she is a very good student and does remember a great deal of the information from prior tests, she will need to spend some more dedicated time reviewing the material in depth and we spoke about a study plan moving forward. This was only the first practice test she has taken and without studying the material in depth she did well. We finished our session by reviewing her in class materials on magnetic fields and we did a couple practice problems in her book to make sure that she understands the material.

Physics Tutoring review by Taylor in Cicero, IL
For today's session, the student and I focused on finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors for matrices. Following this, we covered the methods of applying this concept to solving 2nd order, homogeneous differential equations using the systems of equations approach. Towards the end of the session, we also covered the theoretical underpinnings for the Fourier transform and how it applies to mathematics.

Physics Tutoring review by Stephen in Cicero, IL
We covered Coulomb's Law, basic principles of electric fields, electric charge, current, Ohm's Law and electric potential. The student demonstrated an ability to grasp the concepts quickly, and manage them in her head. I emphasized the importance of writing things down in working problems out and I believe she grasped the importance of this. I believe that over time, if the student applies some of the basic problem solving principles we discussed, she will find the subject matter to be progressively easier.
