ISEE Tutoring review by Laura in Park Forest, IL
Today, we discussed what aspects make a good reader. I also asked her what types of books she enjoys reading. She discussed the types of books she finds difficult and why. I learned that she enjoys reading historical fiction, but has a more challenging time reading science and nonfiction books with more technical vocabulary. She mentioned that when the vocabulary is challenging, she often loses focus, as well as has a more difficult time comprehending the text. Therefore, I had her start with a 7th grade passage. I chose the strategy because the missing words within the passage forces her to think about the passage's meaning, as well as understanding more difficult vocabulary. The student did fantastic because she read slowly and paid attention to the vocabulary. For homework, she is to complete one more activity online and track her progress. After that, I taught her different strategies, and we practiced them with a reading passage from her book. She discussed why she eliminated each choice, as well as highlighted evidence for the question. After practicing strategies, she worked on creating flashcards for vocabulary in her book. We discussed the words she was unfamiliar with in Lesson 1, and she created word/definition/picture cue cards. Her homework assignment is to make flashcards for the unfamiliar words in Lesson 2 and come prepared to complete the synonyms for that lesson. One of her strengths is her vocabulary retention. After reviewing the vocabulary twice, she was able to successfully define all unfamiliar words in Lesson 1. We discussed 4 strategies to answer synonym questions, and every time she used one of the strategies, she made a tally next to that strategy. Finally, we talked about writing and what makes a good written piece. The student mentioned that strong vocabulary, flow between sentences, and a good plan are all important. She said she would like to improve her "hook"ù and conclusion, and she also would like to improve her variety of sentence starters. Her strengths include strong vocabulary and a good plan. We used a prompt from the book (choose a favorite teacher and explain why this teacher is your favorite). She brainstormed why this teacher was her favorite and talked about these ideas. I noticed that with each reason she had examples to back up her reason. She also had a variety of examples. Next time, she will work on combining and organizing these ideas and writing her essay. She was a joy to work with, had a great attitude, and stayed focused and driven throughout the entire session.

ISEE Tutoring review by Melissa in Park Forest, IL
After grading the student's practice test, we went through all of the problems he missed, and as we talked through them he seemed to really understand how to do each one of them. I believe that he really knows what he is doing and will do well if he stops to think about what he is being asked. I hope that on test day he is able to take his time and employ the concepts I taught him over the past few weeks.

On Thursday the student and I met for the first time for assessment tutoring. The mother had given him a diagnostic test to get an idea as to which areas the student will need the most assistance with -- vocabulary.
