Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, we discussed her project to answer an empirical question. She was trying to identify a potential topic. We first discussed breed-specific legislation. Then, we turned our focus towards data from Pew Research. Because there is freely available data, we discussed how to go about coming up with a research question. For example, her dependent variable will have to be quantitative in order to use multiple linear regression. I suggested that she download the survey and begin to look at the questions and find a few that might be interesting as a dependent variable. She will contact me in the future as she narrows down her topic."
"In tonight's session, the student worked on choosing the correct operation for word problems, relating multiplication/division equations with pictures, subtracting and X. He was able to tell me which operation to use in most of the word problems and why he chose that answer to solve it. He worked on most of his homework during the session and was very respectful and engaged in the session. He is a pleasure to work with and did a great job!"
"It was great seeing you today! We only have one section left of your packet. Today, we finished solving quadratics and using transformations. We also were able to start the section on complex numbers. Remember, the form should always be "a+bi." Keep working on those past problems that involve creating tables from equations. See you Tuesday!"
"It was lovely meeting and working with her - she is bright and interested and did well concentrating on math problems! We worked through subtraction problems using Singapore math and checking her work by doing the same problem with the stacking method, word problems and time problems. She has a good grasp on subtraction and rounding and has a great attitude towards learning, but we can work on her intuition for word problems (i.e.. building her confidence re: whether the problem requires addition or multiplication) and her time problems. She will bring her 3A math book for the next session, and we can focus more on money problems."
"Last week, we worked for 45 minutes on two-step equations and my student had it down. This week we spent another 45 minutes working on solving equations with variables on both sides. Sometimes he had to use the Distributive Property, sometimes he had a negative sign outside the parentheses, and there were all kinds of negatives that can trip one up. He blasted through the problems with no trouble! He is doing a great job! Plus, he showed me his last test grade: a 94!"
"Limits, definition of limits with piecewise function, and discontinuity, and general limit ideas and properties were covered today. The student had an excellent attitude towards the material, and she just needs to practice more. Good material, I was able to explain in detail the material to help her understand the material for her quiz."
