History Tutoring review by Kristi in Huntington Park, CA
The student worked hard today. We talked about trying our best and really working on paying attention. I was glad to hear that the decision was made to not retain him. Hopefully, working over the summer will be enough boost to put him right where he needs to be when he starts kindergarten. I am confident in his abilities. We worked on sight words, letter sounds, and rhyming words. We also did a little writing because writing is so closely connected to reading. We will continue to work on writing. He has the skills but he needs to work on his fluency in writing.

History Tutoring review by Tom in Huntington Park, CA
Mostly discussed Beowulf and what makes an Heroic Epic epic. I asked some questions to draw out some critical analysis of the poem and reflect why the poem was important. I was looking for details and a synopsis of the plot. Again, there's no issue with comprehension, I'd just like to see more practice with writing. I suggested that he take some time every day and even just doodle. Even if it doesn't make sense, crafting a phrase or two or simply organizing ideas can be valuable.

We reviewed strategies and question types for the Reading, Math, and English portions of the ACT. We also reviewed strategies for improving your score on the Writing portion. For Reading, we worked on improving comprehension (i.e., underlining key parts, looking for key words in the question). We then did many practice questions together. In Math, we reviewed types of questions and concepts (i.e., sine, cos, tan).

During our session today the student and I worked on her latest homework assignment. I made her tell me how she would set up each problem and what she would do to solve it. I feel that this method seems to work best in helping her to understand how to solve things on her own. I more or less just guided her to discovering the answers on her own. Her confidence seems to be growing. Hopefully she will find some success on her upcoming test.

History Tutoring review by Paul in Huntington Park, CA
The student did a fantastic job today on everything we worked on!  He's getting a really good feel for algebra - knowing how to isolate variables and work backwards to solve an equation.  This is incredibly important, as algebra is used for just about everything going forward.  We finished an algebra worksheet, some science questions and also studied for a make up math test.  He's very solid on all areas for the test and I feel that he'll do quite well.

We finished up with circles today!  Lots more topics to cover, some of which are challenging, so keep in mind the possibility of meeting twice/week instead of once (only if you want).  I think in the next week you should do some practice on your own with circles and triangles, and then I'll answer questions you may have at our next session (Monday).  Good luck!
