Chemistry Tutoring review by Mary in San Diego, CA
Today the student and I reviewed thermochemistry. We went over a practice test that he took. He learned about the nature of Gibbs free energy, entropy and electromotive force. We also discussed transition metals and how carbonic acid applies out in real life.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Jason in San Diego, CA
During this session we continued discussing titrations and titration end points. We began with titration curves, equivalence points and endpoints. I demonstrated sample calculations and had the student do two examples. We moved on to a discussion of oxidation numbers, which he began studying this previous week and will also be covered on his exam Friday. I went through each of the guidelines for assigning an oxidation number and provided several examples of each. I provided several examples for the student to attempt. This session was very productive, the student appeared to understand the material and was able to demonstrate his understanding in the examples he finished. I believe he should do better on his next exam Friday.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Melvin in San Diego, CA
During this session we reviewed Electrochemistry and Organic Chemistry. The student has his SAT 2 this weekend and so this session was basically open to questions he had. He has been doing practice problems and has gone through all the questions in his review book. I gave advice as to what to memorize for the exam since he won't have access to a reference table. Overall this session went well. We have one more session on Thursday before the exam. He should be fine in my opinion. I gave him two websites to look at for review, and for our session Thursday I'll have questions for him to look at; he said he needed some review on limiting reagents.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Benjamin in San Diego, CA
The student and I worked on his chemistry lab. More specifically, we reviewed the essential elements of a lab summary and discussion. The student has had trouble figuring out what exactly to include in his conclusions. We worked through the assignment and worked toward understanding lab conclusions as really a formulaic process in which an instructor simply wants to see that the student understood the relevant material. This perspective really seemed to click with the student. We also did a bit of brainstorming for the subject and structure of one of his English essays.

The student and I started walking through the final review that his Chemistry teacher had given him. We talked about using mole-to-mole ratios to switch between species in a chemical reaction, limiting reactant problems, percent yield, acids and bases (both Arrhenius and Bronsted-Lowry), conjugate acids and bases, pH, Lewis structures, VSEPR geometry, and gas laws.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Amanda in San Diego, CA
During my session with the student, we reviewed for her chemistry final exam. The exam is comprehensive of the material from the entire semester. Some of the topics include, pH & acidity, stoichiometry, drawing Lewis dot structures, making electron configuration, naming compounds, pressure equations, and Avogadro's number. We spent most of our time working on factor label problems because the student said that's where she struggles the most. The student expressed that she felt much more confident after our session. We will continue to review for her final that is scheduled for Wednesday when we meet next Tuesday.
