Test Prep Tutoring review by Jaclyn in San Diego, CA
We continued working on math by applying the general concepts we reviewed to actual ACT math sections. The student's feeling much more confident, and has already noticed a difference in her abilities, so we'll see how that's reflected in the section she does for homework.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Michael in San Diego, CA
Spoke with the student's parents about the logistics of the test and my perception of his learning style, strengths/weaknesses, etc. Reviewed a practice SAT math section and discussed all the questions that he got wrong. Also worked on a verbal section and found that the student was quite comfortable with the analogies, but his vocabulary was a little lacking for the synonym questions. I attempted to get the student to answer the questions in order (1,2,3...), which was difficult because he liked to skip around. My concern is that he might have a translation error from his circled answers on the test and the actual scantron, so I discussed that with his parents. Additionally, reviewed exponent rules for the student's upcoming math test in school.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Shannon in San Diego, CA
The student and I reviewed a math section he'd taken and worked through a timed science section. In both instances, he does well but could improve his score by paying greater attention to detail. He makes some mistakes because he misreads a question or makes a simple error in calculation. Being meticulous is going to be an important element in improving his score.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Ian in San Diego, CA
After seeing progress in the English section over the last two sessions, I redirected our focus to Reading. We started by looking at short passages and identifying main idea, supporting details, and author's purpose. We then moved on to reading ACT-length passages and practicing looking for specific details, identifying sequence of events/cause and effect, evaluating author's voice, and drawing generalizations. Time-adjusted practice yielded a projected score of ~23-25, markedly above the student's last Reading score. The continued jump in score level leads me to believe there may be more externalities (such as performance anxiety, etc.) at work that may need to be addressed. As far as content and test strategies, the student is progressing wonderfully.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Julie in San Diego, CA
The student and I spent the first hour and 15 mins working on reading comp. We discussed the importance of marking up each piece and the best way to do it. The student tends to underline pretty much everything and we'll continue to work on it. However, marking up the stories did help him keep his attention on his work, so that's good. We then worked on math, which is getting better and better each time.
