Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Angela in San Diego, CA
The student wanted help on his math homework, which was converting fractions to decimals on a number line. I reviewed the topics with him, then he did the homework. Next, I asked him to write out all the ways I have taught him to remember what he reads. He was able to remember all of the techniques! We also reviewed a KWL chart and made one for a short story, The Math Bee. He answered questions at the end of the story, and did well. We read Charlotte's Web and made predictions. We summarized the story.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Abby in San Diego, CA
We began today by reviewing the concepts of comparing and contrasting that we'd gone over last week. I asked the student to write her own definitions for these words. We then reviewed the Venn Diagram we'd begun last week, comparing and contrasting the student and Malala, the protagonist in her book. Then we reviewed some of the vocabulary words we've learned, focusing on the 'gh' as 'f' sound in the word 'rough', and the 'tion' as 'shun' sound in 'education'. The student understands these concepts but needs practice recalling them on her own. She requires some prompting which makes it seem she's not so used to relying on her own resources to find answers. This is a skill she could definitely use some practice on. The more she relies on herself and her own knowledge and skill sets to answer questions and come to new understandings in her reading, the more confidence she will gain in this area. We then spent the rest of the session reading "Malala...". The student's comprehension can sometimes get tripped up by her lack of fluency. We focused on slowing down and sounding out difficult words in order to comprehend sentences and thoughts as a whole.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Daisy in San Diego, CA
The student worked on her reading and phonics homework for the week. She read mixed up letter names and sounds, practiced her spelling words for the week, and read 9 sentences with those spelling words. Today was the first time she wanted to read her sentences and she read every single one with only a little help!! I was so proud of her! Next, we focused on the letter "g" and identified pictures which started with "g." After this, we did an Easter word search and colored an Easter bunny. The student found 3 of the words in the word search all by herself even though they were longer words! Last, we read "Hunches in Bunches" by Dr. Seuss. After we read the story, she identified the what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story by talking to me about it and drawing me a picture of what she remembered. It was a great session!

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Molly in San Diego, CA
For this session, we begin by reviewing and drilling digraph sounds. Next, we will do a guided reading lesson with a level A text, "The Big Cat." We will practice phonemic awareness by identifying words that begin with the "C" sound. Then, we will practice grammar and sentence structure by identifying verbs in sentences and illustrating those verbs. Finally, we will discuss what "Main Idea" means. I will tell him the main idea, then I will challenge him to find evidence that supports that main idea inside the text.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Brittany in San Diego, CA
Student R *Practiced spelling words aloud and with letter tiles --issues with: colors, started, clouds *Practiced identifying words --needs lots of practice with remembering to sound out words and remembering letter pair sounds *Review of shapes --very good, no problems with triangles and rectangles today *Practiced counting coins --needs a lot of practice, particularly counting with quarters --issues counting generally once he is at a certain number, for example, if he has 0.25 and needs to add 0.10 he jumps to 0.50 or 0.70, so we will work harder on understanding counting principles (by 5s, 10s, 1s) Student J *Practiced reading and comprehension (spent a lot of time on this) --improving with reading and sounding out words; however, really needs to practice focusing on letters in the words instead of deciding what the word is before looking at all the letters --very good with comprehending what he reads *Reviewed spelling words to this point by spelling them with tiles --still struggling with several words, such as: bear, fair, fare *Practiced word identification --good

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Jackson in San Diego, CA
We were able to get a lot of work done. We did a bunch of reading and writing exercises out of her study books and she did well! When she applies herself, her reading ability greatly improves. We also did a little bit of work on math today. Her counting has greatly improved; she used to struggle with the teens, but today she breezed right through them.
