HSPT Tutoring review by Carolyn in San Diego, CA
We did some reading practice. She's still having a hard time remembering to look back at the passage. Then we practiced converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers (which she has a solid understanding of now,) percent change (where she does well until she needs to take multiple steps,) and combining like terms (where she's doing much better and just has trouble when negative numbers are involved).

HSPT Tutoring review by Kelsey in San Diego, CA
The student completed the diagnostic. We reviewed vocab and algebra word problems. For homework, she is to complete a full-length practice test and review vocab. I am going to be emailing her a list to help her organize vocabulary.

HSPT Tutoring review by Kia in San Diego, CA
We worked on reading comprehension and exponents. At first, the student was struggling with exponents, but after going through a few exercises I could see it coming back to him and "clicking"-- which was great! We worked slowly and didn't focus on timing, but as he gets more comfortable we will increase the pace.

HSPT Tutoring review by Pallavi in San Diego, CA
The student and I corrected 1.75 sections of the practice test she took. We wrote up a vocabulary list based on the verbal section words with which she was unfamiliar. We talked about eliminating choices, understanding analogies, and grouping answers. We also stepped through several of the math problems. She learned how to translate sentences into math equations, how to compare values and determine if a third statement is true based on two previous statements, and how to work with series. I think this session was productive, and she learned a lot. Her homework is to finish the practice test, correct it, and step through the problems like we did today, circling the ones which she cannot understand even after trying to redo them so we can work on them together next time). She also should try to finish another practice test by the next time we work on test prep together.

HSPT Tutoring review by Najwa in San Diego, CA
First off we went over the homework that I had given her which included both math and verbal. Afterwards we did reading comprehension and she did nothing less than stellar on that. She is a pleasure to teach.

HSPT Tutoring review by Darren in San Diego, CA
He and I spent the first part of our session last evening working on his math homework for school and reviewing material that he has recently struggled with on tests. We went over some order of operations problems (focusing on distributing negatives through parentheses) and word problems. His homework focused on using charts to arrange information from word problems. The charts seemed to help him quite a bit, as they allow him to visualize the numbers and how they fit together in parallel equations. We continued to work on "translating" word problem terms into arithmetic notation. We spent the remainder of our time working through a series of sentences I'd written that contained a variety of comma errors. He did better on these than he had done with comma issues at our previous session, leading him to declare himself the Master of Commas.
