The student did very well today. He was exceptional on vocabulary words (20) that have a good chance of being on the test, and he was able to select these words when using them in a sentence, and for fill int he blank answers. He had about 25 questions, and answered 23 correct. If he does this well on Tuesday's test, he will pass. He also did two sections on the April test released questions, and got 10 out of 12 correct. I then spent time with him going over how to take the test, and boosting his confidence, which should be very positive after two straight outstanding sessions. This test will come down to the student staying focused, taking his breaks, which he will be allowed, and staying positive. He has the allowance of taking all day, if needed, to answer these questions, and I am telling him to use the time, and to double or triple check his answers too. I think he is in a great position to do well on test.

The students did very well with all review material. They were able to solve practice problems with fractions very quickly. The students were both able to identify U.S. money in a word problem after talking about how U.S. money is like U.K. money. We reviewed basic strategies for test taking, including how to fill in a bubble without making extra marks, how to eliminate wrong answers, and how to check work twice. We also talked about inappropriate topics for writing such as murder and firearms.

In this two part session, the student and I continued to work on preparing her for the ACT writing section. Building on previous sessions, she and I examined a practice essay that I had her write. I read and scored her work, after which we discussed what the strengths were as well as the areas that leave room for improvement. In the second half of our session, I provided her with sample student responses to the essay question that she worked on. Without telling her the score of each, I had her rank the essays and score them. We then discussed why some essays were better than others and then we compared these to her own work. We ended the session by making a list of possible strategies to use when writing the essay.

We had practical lesson/prep for ACT writing section. After discussing the expectations regarding style and organization, the next step was to build experience engaging with a prompt and building a response. We used this session for guided practice in which we constructed an outline to a five-paragraph essay fitting the ACT's standards for broad argumentative rhetoric. She asked a lot of questions about organization of arguments and selection of examples, and with some guidance was able to select examples and paragraphs structure to respond to the prompt broadly but cohesively.
