I am currently working on a graduate degree in Chinese history from the University of British Columbia. Prior to this, I have worked as a test prep instructor in Korea and China with The Princeton Review and as an ESL teacher at New Mexico State University. As a test prep instructor, I taught SAT, SSAT, TOEFL, and GRE. Test Prep, as I have come to experience it does not mean the memorizing of 10,000 things. It is understanding that standardized tests are logic games, that they test nothing outside what you have already learned in school. The rub comes from the presentation, that standardized tests are designed as puzzles. There are rules and operating procedures to be followed, and if those rules and operating procedures are followed, you can improve your scores. This all boils down down to what the student wants from the test and the following school experience. As such, I strive for an individualized session that is molded to your needs and interests. And really, this is what I believe education is all about, finding a dialogical space for individual and outside world so that both can grow.

I love working with children. This passion began when my siblings and I would "play school" with our green Disney chalkboard. We would take turns being the "teacher", and I delighted in the feel of chalk in my hands. Upon graduating from New Mexico State University with a degree in elementary education, I became a fifth grade teacher with Las Cruces Public Schools. Again, I enjoyed the powdery feel of chalk in my hands, but this time, I wasn't playing. I took my responsibilities very seriously and with great joy. As life took me to other school districts and different grade levels, time replaced chalk with dry erase markers and district-developed instructional goals with common core standards. However, my love of working with elementary-age children has never been superseded. In reflecting on those years, I bring these research-based practices to the tutoring platform: --Parents are a child's first and most important teacher; communication with parents is vital to a successful elementary tutoring plan, --Working towards mastery in mathematics leads towards a student's confidence and independence in mathematics, --Incorporating a child's interests into the curriculum is more likely to help students develop proficiency than one that does not, --Instruction in handwriting should remain in the curriculum due to its association with fine/gross motor development, gains in reading and writing, and memory benefits, --Developmental ages and stages must be taken into account when planning and carrying out a tutoring session. For example, an off-task student may need a "wiggle break" or review of how to carry out an assignment before they can return to task, --Shaming is never an acceptable form of discipline. Teacher preparedness and pacing of instructional delivery have a huge impact on student behavior, --Horse, then cart: Establishing a student's base of information must precede hands-on mathematics and science for maximum retention of concepts, and --Training in HOW to test is likely to result in a reduction of test anxiety and higher test scores.

Embarking on a journey that intertwined my love for learning and passion for community service, I discovered the transformative power of education. From group homes to the heart of a Dyslexia program, the evolution wasn't without its trials, yet teaching children from K-12, especially those with disabilities, allowed me to be a better teacher meeting students needs to become advocates of their own learning.

Like an apple tree produces apples, I teach. The best teachers are life-long students. My best teachers were humble and tenacious. Unafraid to be wrong, they questioned everything. They made a point of acknowledging the natural learning curve of their students, regardless of experience or subject matter. Aspiring to this, I am as transparent with my students as possible. I guide them to "question everything," even me. I highlight as much my own questions as answers, encouraging them to do the same, in hopes to demonstrate that the latter cannot exist without the former, and that each holds equal value. I select readings and design assignments that will resonate with my students current lives; to really learn, after all, we first must be interested. Student buy-in is imperative, and there are many, many ways to learn the necessary skills to succeed in our age of innovation. Typically these skills boil down to the four Cs--critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creative problem solving. The best teaching is relevant, and endures. My students are challenged to learn about themselves and their responsibilities; it is not just the content, but how the student succeeded or struggled, and what they took away, that matters. In brief, this learning-by-doing mimics lifepreparing students to assess and make decisions based on what type of person they want to be, regardless of the their interests or intellect. Like my best teachers before me, I am continually learning alongside my students, so we enter the wide world together, each with better answers and bigger questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who graduated from NMSU understand the university's curriculum, teaching style, and academic expectations firsthand. They can provide insider perspective on how to succeed in specific courses, navigate challenging professors, and develop study strategies that align with how NMSU instructors teach. This direct experience helps them anticipate common stumbling blocks and explain concepts in ways that resonate with NMSU students.

Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have demonstrated expertise in their subject areas—many of whom earned strong grades in those subjects at NMSU or have relevant professional experience. Each tutor is vetted to ensure they can teach effectively and communicate clearly. Beyond academic credentials, these tutors bring real-world knowledge of what it takes to excel at NMSU.

NMSU alumni tutors support students across a wide range of subjects including STEM fields (engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry), business, agriculture, education, and liberal arts. Because they've taken NMSU courses themselves, they're particularly effective at helping with major-specific classes and foundational courses that feed into upper-level work. You can get matched with a tutor in virtually any subject your coursework requires.

Your first session is an opportunity for you and your tutor to get to know each other and identify your specific needs. The tutor will ask about your current challenges, learning style, and goals—whether you're struggling with a particular concept, preparing for an exam, or looking to improve your overall understanding. From there, they'll develop a personalized approach tailored to how you learn best.

In a classroom, instruction is designed for the average student, which means some concepts move too quickly while others feel repetitive. With personalized tutoring, your tutor adjusts the pace, depth, and teaching method to match your specific needs. This targeted approach—supported by decades of learning science research—helps you fill knowledge gaps faster and build genuine understanding rather than just memorizing for tests.

Yes. NMSU alumni tutors often excel with major-specific courses because they've completed the same sequence of classes. Whether you're in engineering, agriculture, business, or another program, connecting with a tutor who has navigated your major can be invaluable. They understand the prerequisites you need, the concepts that typically trip students up, and how different courses build on each other.

Absolutely. Beyond explaining course material, tutors can share effective study techniques, time management strategies, and test-taking approaches that helped them succeed at NMSU. They can help you build stronger habits around reading, note-taking, problem-solving, and exam preparation—skills that transfer across all your courses and contribute to long-term academic success.

Varsity Tutors makes the process simple. You tell us your subject, current challenges, and availability, and we match you with a qualified tutor who fits your needs. If you'd like someone with NMSU experience specifically, let us know—we'll prioritize connecting you with alumni who can bring that insider perspective to your learning.
